To make it more approachable to Japanese audiences. It is an unfortunate belief in both the West and in Japan that the protagonist has to be the same nationality/ethnicity as your target audience, which then results in dumb non-sense like Tom Cruise being the main character of a movie that's about samurai in Japan.
Interestingly, China does not seem to share this belief, at least not as vehemently. They'll happily have a Hollywood star as the protag of their Chinese film if they can get one, as long as they are not from a wrong race.

Actually I would be surprised if Ito HASN’T done a 4th wall break trope yet, although Japan doesn’t have a 4th wall concept Ito is heavily influenced by Western fiction.

Yes it does, what the hell are you even talking about? I don't think it's even possible to write a story without having some conception of the fourth wall, even if you don't know the term for it. And plenty of manga have done fourth wall breaks, such as Dragon Ball.

No it doesn’t. It gets the idea of the characters being aware of the audience of course, but it’s not a trope that’s commonly understood in the JP cultural zeitgeist. That’s why they loved DDLC so much, the 4th wall concept seems fresh to them, like how Monika can identify if the player is streaming the game and talk to the audience really blew them away.

Except that many mainstream manga has had 4th wall breaks for decades. The idea that meta-fiction was somehow fresh or new in Japan and that caused DDLC to succeed is laughable , you can make the same exact argument for Undertale in the west. DDLC succeeded not because it was meta, but because it was meta done well, just like Undertale, which incidentally was also very big in Japan 2 years before DDLC, so meta being fresh by the time it came out is nonsense.

It's probably the most faithful adaptation I've seen. The biggest change is the female creature part. In the original, Frankenstein regrets creating her before finishing her and destroys her body, fearing they'd have children, then the monster has revenge against him by killing his friend.

Ito probably changed that part to reference the "Bride of Frankenstein" movie by making her a character, even if briefly.
