You can start by dropping words like zoomie.
>>280536497 (OP)>nostalgic and retro animeWell how would you define that? I was born in 2007, so if we're talking anime from before I was born, I guess pic related for me; it was one of the first anime I had exposure to; I remember my older brother and sister talking about it when I was a kid. I still haven't watched it, looks mid af, but I typically don't like old ass series made before I was born. What, do you like watching black and white movies? Yeah that's what I thought boomer.
But if we're talking about my personal favorite series from when I was a kid, it'd have to be SnK. My older brother introduced it to me when I was in elementary school and it was my favorite series for a while. For the millennioids out there, SnK was our dragon ball. I remember watching clips on YouTube during lunch with my friends, man those were the days lol.

>>280565132Christianity in Japan is seen as Taboo
If there's one thing I really dislike about modern internet is the general recency bias it seems ti have. I don't expect old stuff to have the same volume of discussion as new things do especially in terms of hype and speculation but it feels like too many things are forgotten as soon as they're over. You rarely see the same kind of sustainability. There's no real focus on creative personal fan sites and shrines and web rings like that. It's only reddit and wikis and whatever feeds the hype train.
>>280576172People still run independent fan sites (largely on platforms like neocities and nekoweb), they just don't get a lot of traffic.
Also a lot of shows discussed here are genuinely unpopular, not because they're bad or anything it's just that they're niche. For a lot of people discussion on twitter and discord is enough to get by.
>>280576465>it's just that they're nicheWell I feel like that's more to my point. Where else should the niche come up if not the enthusiasts site. I feel like that idea has really changed meaning too.
>>280576172I feel a little insulated from this because I hang out with a bunch of fujos who are still talking about YYH and the like (older fujos in my experience have been excellent anime conversation partners). I haven't seen a bona fide series/character "shrine" in a very long time, but there are more modern webrings for general weeaboo interests.
I don't have any screencaps but I watched Riding Bean last night and it was great.
>>280576059I'm sure it was at some point, and breaking taboos by making his major heroes christians was probably part of the fun for people like Nagai, but the extent to which WMT and shoujo portrayed religion leads me to think "taboo" was a bit of an exaggeration by the 70s. Stuff like Flanders no Inu goes beyond "documentary freedom" as religion becomes part of the core narrative and themes. The ending is pretty legendary for that.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxsXErQsf8I
I can give you that Takahata scrubbed religion out of Heidi though. It was probably for the best too.
>>280577059While almost certainly not intentional, I tend to view WMT's heavy religious themes to be satire.
>Surely God made me a slave and killed 20 other children for a reason>Surely God sank our ship and only left 5 people alive for a reason.>Surely God gave my mother cancer and made my father lose all his money for a reason>Surely God caused and earthquake and killed both my parents and half the people in my village for a reason
>>280560259But the writing was shit.
>>280577059>I'm sure it was at some point,Mostly between the years 1600 and the late 1800s. It was a whole thing. In the modern days it's less Taboo and more uncommon. Almost like if you met someone who told you they were Mormon. Though before the era of Isolationism some warlords very much loved the Christian's guns
>>280577381I could see the staff sometimes having a laugh behind the scenes. In fact, in the case of Flanders I just remembered the Calpis producer involved in it was apparently christian (ๅๅๅจๅฃซ้ on wikipedia). But yeah WMT could be pretty hardcore and the studio seemed to embrace that as part of their identity, beyond that producer.
>>280578619Haha. Makes sense.
>>280577574I for one am not going into OVAs expecting brilliant writing.
why doesn't anime look like this anymore?
>>280581103few reasons. Chiefly though because they forgot how important hair is
>>280576059Within the past eighty years, four prime ministers have been openly Christian. That doesn't sound very "taboo" to me.
Started Video Senshi Laserion, a mecha about MC's video game robot being transported into real life to be used to fight in a war against a rebellion by moon colonists of the people of the Earth Federation. Clear inspirations from other shows, like Gundam, but it's pretty self aware in that there are nods and meta jokes towards tropes and references. They also do lean into the concept of it being a robot from a video game, as the robot can teleport and materialize itself and weapons out of what seems to be computer data, which is presented with those cool 80s laser grids like in Tron. Laserion (the robot) seems to take design inspiration from the Transformers series, having blocky limbs, and is unique in that other mecha in the show are more reminiscent of Zeta Gundam's mobile suits, having curvier features accented with pointy parts like wings or shoulder pads. It's pretty good so far.

in the case of the western anime fandom specifically, there were only a tiny fraction of series that were ever released officially so the reference pool was much smaller.
If you lived in America and wanted to watch anime in say 1993, you had like a half dozen OVAs and maybe three TV series you could watch without having to learn Japanese physically go to Japan to buy the tapes (and TV anime mostly didn't get home releases back then so even then your only choice was bootleg recordings or OVAs).

https://youtu.be/WowalkW6lKg
>>280614672This is something I sort of take a big issue with. Roughly till just after my generation or so it wouldn't really be weird for kids in the 80s and 90s to be VERY familiar with stuff from our parents generation. And I don't just mean cartoons like Loony Toons or Scooby Doo but a lot of shows. Either through Nick at a night and the like we were all very familiar with The Munsters, Gilligan and Barbra Eden's midriff. Even the show of our generation made pretty overt references to older shows, for example
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmIaL2BK1Zk
To be honest I feel like it's weird now that kids really don't seem to get anything that's even just a few years old. I really wonder what changed things. We skipped classes to watch the morning DB time-slot even though we knew the episode was going to be repeated on the after school time-slot.
Our school's copy center/photocopy lady was forbidden by the school's director of copying any Dragon Ball pictures, because everyone was collecting them on albums (probably from the few folk that had internet and downloaded them), and were making it impossible for teachers to copy actual school documents.

>>280614952There are still plenty of zoomers who watch the old big things though. The big 3, fmab, etc. Even the older stuff like dragon ball or yyh.
I think part of it is the shift in style as well. Cel anime look pretty but because it's so much harder to do, you get a lot of still frames and janky or non-existent choreography. It doesn't appeal to the zoomer mind. Yes I'm sure there's a lot of nice movement being shown in this thread but most of that comes from OVA's, not TV series. And that format is practically dead now because of streaming.

>>280614952>>280632550The turn of the century and big switch to digital that goes full force right when the 2000s start kind of changes things. Those old cartoons could still be passed off as looking sort of contemporary because of the way things were made in those few decades and even though a 60s or 70s cartoon might look old if you were watching them in the 90s, they really start to look old old as the 2000s and beyond happen (old doesn't mean bad btw).
Also it seems like the money all started going to CG animation at roughly the same time period and all those big budget CG movies are even more different looking. Like you could take 1970 to 1995 and then 1995 to 2005 and you can see much bigger changes in that 10 year window than you could in the 25 year window
The cel anime was the early 2000s is pretty neat. Cool that sparse amounts were still being made while it was being phased out

>>280639101yes. Reminder, Japan is the biggest bond holder of the US. This was post WW2 and it was not a coincidence. However, because of the surge of money this caused due to again the fiat money system, the japanese sold their soul to the new american empire created post WW2. There's more details than this the situation created ruined Japan forever.
>>280639221why did 80s anime blow 60s anime out of the water, then.
>>280639324Because at the time, the anime and manga industry was not bought out by printed money yet. Then the suits rolled in and took out all the soul. Thats why you had many people being worked to death quite literally cause they were being taken advantage of. The new styles are meant to cut costs not to invoke soul. As is the inevitable end of fiat systems.
>>280554582>>280620800>>280623247On cultural phenomenon works (and I am speaking strictly on Americans), people tend to forget that Dragon Ball had a similar way of 'fizzling out', like how Naruto and Bleach did towards the end, or indeed like how Attack on Titan did.
Like, a lot of interest had waned and moved on to other works when Dragon Ball GT started airing- and yes, that is part of Dragon Ball as America knows it. Dragon Ball was not a manga over there- it wasn't even "Dragon Ball", it was "Dragon Ball Z".
The only big anime that sustained interest for the entirety of their runs on a popular scale would be shorter ones. Longest you got is Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 (stole quite a bit of DB's thunder).
>>280639477>Longest you got is Fullmetal Alchemist 2003FMA was a meme.
>>280639582Yeah and it was the biggest fucking deal at the time outside of Dragon Ball (shortly followed by Naruto's boost in western popularity around 04-05), that's why CoS is UNIVERSALLY regarded as complete dogshit, everyone watched FMA03 and went to see the sequel.
>>280639405Toei has existed since the 1950s.
working animators to death has been the norm across the world since the very beginning, Walt Disney was basically forcing interns and receptionists to do unpaid overtime to finish movies back when he was alive, and the Jap animators were getting paid even less.
the reason bubble era anime was so well animated is for the same reason their economy was booming: real estate speculation meant they had more money than they knew what to do with, so they were throwing mountains of cash at any vanity project that came an investor's way because they were guaranteed to make the money back.
>>280639644You got half of it right. They did have a lot of money, but that was their downfall.
>>280639477DBZ remained a major cultural touchstone for years after the series stopped premiering. There's a reason why so much of 00s anime internet culture is DBZ references. NO other anime has had something as iconic as Over 9000 or power levels, for example. People reference that stuff even without knowing what it's from, just from cultural osmosis.
>>280639755>There's a reason why so much of 00s anime internet culture is DBZ references. That's because DBZ was still airing on broadcast TV and getting "new" movies at the time, simply because Americans got the series so late. Dragon Ball Z, as Americans knew it, ended in 2003.
The things you listed as iconic are also primarily iconic BECAUSE for several YEARS the same 50 odd episodes of DBZ were rebroadcasted in the 90s. That's why they took off.
But my point was that this idea of sustained popularity = cultural touchstone is dumb because Dragon Ball itself didn't stay relevant. Barely anyone cared about DBGT which aired from 03-04, and basically nobody gave a shit about DB which aired concurrently.
Naruto itself IS a cultural touchstone in the same way. There was a whole thing during covid about "Naruto running into Area 51", years after Naruto had ended and over a decade past its peak of relevancy.
>>280639888>ended in 2003and for years after was still getting memes. Shoop Da Woop and Daily Dose are from what, 2007?
>nobody cared about GTand? we're talking about Z.

>>280640111>Shoop Da WoopMore like 2005 probably.
>Daily DoseThat was literally forced spam. That's in the name.
>and? we're talking about Z.Which again, shows that Dragon Ball as a franchise had a sell by date on sustained interest.
>the Naruto Run meme was the first time anyone talked about it or cared in years, and Shippuden was still airing at the time.Huge difference there in that the majority of people interested in Naruto had finished it by 2015.
With Dragon Ball Z, the vast majority of people watching it watched it via American broadcast.
>>280640259>2005not according to KYM (grain of salt), the first shoop da woop is a YT video from 2007.
>forced spamstill a meme, one that people still talk about today. you post purple and green anywhere and people will know what it's referring to. regardless, my point with Over 9000 and power levels is that they got so popular that people who have never seen DBZ will reference them in regular speech even 20+ years after the fact. They've become general internet slang. the fact GT has no real internet memes despite airing afterwards is proof of my point.
can you name a single Naruto meme? not even one that normalfags recognise, but just in general?
>>280640503>not according to KYM (grain of salt), the first shoop da woop is a YT video from 2007.I didn't need to check, but I did and it confirmed what I was thinking, which is that it actually came from /b/ (and that they don't know the exact date it came around, just that the earliest YT example is 2007).
>can you name a single Naruto meme? not even one that normalfags recognise, but just in general?Well, I did. Naruto running. I don't tend to stick around in normalfag circles, but I do recall the soundtrack also being a meme, similar to how the American replacement score for Dragon Ball gets used a lot for memes.

>>280652595The botched release of DB not once but twice in the states was a tragedy. They couldn't even get DBZ right the first time they tried to release it heavily edited in 96.
I think Naruto had been off the air for a few years before the Area 51 event.
FMA ran on Cartoon Network which would have been included in almost any basic cable package at the time. COS probably refers to the FMA movie.
>>280652758>The botched release of DB not once but twice in the states was a tragedyIndeed. When I first got internet, I was shocked to learn that the americans started the DB story right in the middle, which made absolutely no sense to me. Like, characters weren't even introduced, they all just showed up nonsensically with planet-destroying powers.
I think they didn't even know that Goku's full name was actually Son Goku. Same for Son Gohan, etc.
The swapped OST was another tragedy. The original japanese soundtrack was absolute soulful and is still one of the best ever for action anime for me.
>>280652910It's like how we got GTO. Shonan Junai Gumi was full of great stories and character development that was completely ignored in the states. GTO might have felt like a more well rounded series, but it was made so much better with all the context of the original.
