Ah, I've been meaning to read this. I loved Kaiji and Kurosawa, but Mahjong filters me (also means I only know Kaiji Part 1 and 2... really should catch up before it resumes. Also read Ten, but most of it was lost on me) so it's nice this has none.
Is it true this was axed? If so, did it negatively affect the ending?
I'll catch up/read along anyway, just wanna know if I should curb my expectations as far as that's concerned.

Well, that's already all there and it's not taking away from anyone else. You might as well say that even having a job is just relying on someone to give you money in return for services.

It's not that he wants to live in the middle of nowhere with no human contact and DIY his whole life, he just wants to feel that he's living by himself, for himself.
Anonymous No.280767062 [Report]

>can you call what Gai is trying to achieve independance?
I'd argue yes. In the same way a street cat leeching off human leftovers and infrastructure is considered independent. Would they survive without us? Probably not at the same scale, but some would just adapt to another environment. If I'm trying to be too pedantic, I don't think parasitism equates fully to dependence when the host (humans, society, gibs, parents) can't be bothered to push back, just like we can't be bothered to do anything about street cats. So in a way, the kids Gai is upset about are also independent, they've simply found a loophole system that cucks their parents into serving them.

I'm not gonna lie it's quite a good telling of perceptions changing as you fly the nest.
That feeling of superiority for living the "real thing" is kinda cringeworthy, but these are kids so it's perfectly natural for them to take pride in that.
It makes me feel that it's a retelling of FKMTs or one of his friends/family's actual experience or feelings around their teens and I wonder how far away that was when this was written.

I can relate with the feeling
Not the actual circumstance, fortunately or unfortunately depending on how you want to look at it.
Unlike Gai, while I felt the same way, I was too cowardly to pursue it. Well maybe, there's also the fact that I wasn't in the same position as him. If I didn't have a family to be tethered to, like he doesn't I think I would have totally done the same as him, I mean i wanted to do it too and I'm in a much better situation.

But in the end the rational part of me won out, like all the other characters in the manga say it's kinda crazy and nonsensical to put up with those hardships when you really don't have to and also have no plan or anything like that, merely for the feeling of self-reliance and a sort of freedom that, like he notes actually isn't all that "free".

Here's a ranking on likelihood of FKMT adaptations (keep in mind, almost all of these are below 5% in terms of chance)
>Tonegawa/Ichijo/Hancho
Probably the most popular ongoing Fukumoto work still.
>Akagi Continuation or Remake
Extremely popular in Japan to this day, so I can see this happening.
>Buraiden Gai Movie or ONA
This seems like a weird pick, but yeah, this very well could happen considering it's a very condensed work, and we do see legacy works getting picked up for adaptations (a recent one was Oda's "MONSTERS", though that got tied into One Piece).
You can also lump in other one-shots and short stories here, like Confession.
>Legend of the Strongest Man Kurosawa
This could be adapted into multiple one cour seasons, or even condensed to a two cour season if a studio tried. It's fairly well received, and has had a spin-off and full sequel, which was also pretty popular.
>Kaiji S3 or Reboot
I don't think this will ever happen since Kaiji Part 3-6 is all one continuous story UNLIKE Parts 1 and 2, but this is more likely than everything after this point.
>Ten
Too hard on the mahjong, too reliant on Akagi in the final arc, too long. There's a reason most FKMT get adapted as dramas, and the mahjong is a big part of it (that and the fujoshi).
>Gin to Kin
Again, too 'hard', it's not exactly an anime you could sell an audience on.
>Zero
We're both long past the point where this could be up for adapting, as well as far beyond that fucking cliffhanger its been on for what, 12 years? 13 years?
>Misc. spinoffs and other works
Too niche or too tied up in other works to adapt.

Certain lows allow you to occupy land for long enough that you own it, and variations of that. I believe its intent was to settle title disputes, say if part of the Empire State Building was found to be the neighbors technically, to just make the case dissappear and maintain the status quo. You can't exactly demolish the building to move it? It's often abused by drug addicts who broke into construction sites and such to claim they own certain buildings, which is usually thrown out for being ridiculous, but a drain on the legal system and everyone involved.

Gin to Kin is very popular in Japan and there's already a live action adaptation.

Yeah, but again, that's because the audience for Gin to Kin would be more receptive to a drama (it's a crime drama with a significant fujoshi audience), same reason why Ten and Akagi both had successful TV dramas.
I don't see these works getting anime simply due to that fact alone, that they would be more successful within another medium.

Again, Kaiji is too massive at this point. The manga as it is has no clear effective stopping point that isn't a cliffhanger until, at best, Part 5's ending. That's around THIRTY VOLUMES of material, and again, Part 5 is barely an ending.
They certainly could Akagi it and just stop at the end of Part 3 or 4, but that calls into the question why they even bothered. S1 and S2 existed to advertise a movie, that's why they exist, making an S3 to tell an incomplete story for no reason would be absurd.
