It's semi-realistic, noobs don't do that, especially if part of a club that fucks around. Usually some dive master gets real pissy about protecting a local reef and forced the divers to strap their gear down better and that is when divers learn. It's not universal that all dive masters are pissy about it.
Japan is actually a bit weird for their divers - when I've seen them in the wild they are all hyper bunched up together and holding hands and shit to not get lost. No clue if that is a travel thing or something their dive masters teach. One of these days I want to hit up Japan to dive their reefs and see what shit the locals actually do. Fuck that flight time though.
