Even Ohba was getting bored by the end of it. Platinum End is such an embarrassing failure that unlike a lot of post success misfires that other mangaka have NOBODY liked it or are contarian enough to defend it ironically. Failures such as Gunblaze West (Watsuki) Samurai 8 (Kishimoto) or everything Yasuhiro Kanล has done after Mx0 can be argued failed because they could capture an audience right away and we cut too soon before they could truly get interesting but Platinum End should have been taken out of the pasture from the beginning.

It depends on how you look at it. Aliens imply that life on earth arose along with the seed Of God they planted, so in a way they or even "the creature" fall into the category the Doctor invented to define God.
Even the aliens don't know if they were the work of other aliens' planting or if a universal God really exists, so they consider it a stupid debate.
Summary, even there Yoneda got it wrong, lol.

Ive tried to read something like that into it. That the importance is to treat all life as important and find happiness regardless. But it just doesn't work cuz almost every single character fucked things up getting to this point. You're prolly the closest to a reasonable take on the whole thing but it really emphasizes how useless and impotent our main characters were.

Her plan was always to kill god.
If the god choosing process would have resulted in no candidates, the old god would eventually die because he needed to fuse with somebody new.
Gaku's entire goal was to kill god, and we know he was told information by Muni so it's safe to assume that him succeeding in the doublearrowing of the last two candidates at the same time would've resulted in the same end as this one. That was the original plan. Her winning anyway while losing is really just luck.

And the last page explains ogatoro's intentions pretty well. The 'secrets of heaven' she is privy to as the angel of darkness is the true purpose of god - to evolve and gain enough power to eventually be capable of mercy killing some sort of extradimensional life form.
With that in mind, her candidate makes perfect sense. She chose a kid who thinks that the most important thing you can do with unlimited power is kill people that want to die.

Based and true, the ending is kino.
The fedora rick is annoying, but he's supposed to be. He can't fathom the idea that he's wrong and his line of thinking would've directly led to the end of the entire world.
I like this ending because ohba hates the shit characters as much as I do. None of these fuckers tried to help or even pay any mind to a suicidal teen, they just went "Yep I dont want to be stranded up there anyway you want to die? Perfect, then you should take the bad outcome."
And now they all pay for it.

I skipped a whole bunch of chapters, was it ever explained why the creature wanted to pick it successor exclusively out of suicidal Japanese people? You'd think if the creature dying was such a massively bad thing it would have at least avoided the suicidal people, and ideally considered more than just Japan in its selection. People blame Rick and Morty but it's actually the creature and the angels that ruined everything.

Thanks OP.

>Final Thoughts?

I basically shared my thoughts as I went along the storytime but to summarize, it clearly should have just been red arrows. Those were what allowed for interesting gambits and creative uses of the power, showcasing character's intellects and tactics. I imagine a version where a fan favorite character would have been some super soldier mercenary that one of the candidates arrowed to get a strong bodyguard who was in love with him or her, or some badass moments where it's revealed that this character who was clearly under the influence due to her devotion to another character was revealed to have truly just loved him that much etc.

The white arrow was only interesting in relation to the protagonist's pacifism. Similar to Rurouni Kenshin, who rather than allow himself to be unarmed he bears a reverse edged sword not just for defense but to show his fortitude in his promise to never take a life again. Unfortunately, with the wings in addition to all of this, the mind game battles turned into a game of tag, with the outcomes being more about how dumb the characters were rather than how smart.

Highlights were Yoneda and Temari, and even just for the sort of interesting character was the ugly katana wielder who I had a great laugh at his introduction "I was born poor and ugly" and with all you anons replying with "literally me".

>Thank God (creature) this only lasts 58 chapters, even then it felt like an eternity

It makes me wonder how much of its length was just due to the clout of the duo. After 2 hit series I'm sure Shueisha was all "let them cook" and trusting the process. Similar to Samurai 8 where had it been anyone other than Kishimoto he'd have joined the U19 club easily.

Yeah. Its main strengths was its secrecy and perfect aim when not using it on someone with wings. Main issue was its range (I forget how much) since while it was fine for the most uses it wasn't quite as world reaching like the Death Note was, so it was more on par with someone like the DC sniper really.

Yeah, the rules in Death Note all made some sort of sense and the way they'd use them in interesting manners was really cool. Things like the 33 days you stay in love felt too long and having 14 arrows at once to do that gave everyone too many options and not enough challenges.

Shitposting aside, it's quite the sight to have everyone vanishing leaving behind their clothes and belongings to scatter in the wind. Obata at least didn't skimp out on the art. As for the manga itself what a mess. On paper it sounds like Ohba and Obata getting their chance to make a real version of Reversi complete with all the lessons they explored in Bakuman. But the execution goes to show that making a hit isn't easy even for veterans with a track record for success. We can't know for sure what happened behind the scenes but I can't help but think, like other people mentioned, that they had spineless editors. And honestly who could fault them given Ohba and Obata's prior successes. For all its faults though I'm still glad Platinum End exists.

Thank you for the storytimes, OP. Reading PE for the first time along with you all was, uh, a pleasure.
Yeah, no. This sucked. There were a lot of interesting concepts introduced or alluded to. If this was supposed to be a study in nihilism, it did not work. But the entire story falls under the weight of baffling writing choices, and the pacing must have been absolutely glacial reading monthly. It felt like that daily for whole stretches of chapters.
Before reading, all I knew was that the story was considered disappointing and there was a troll level ending. Hoo boy. I actually think that the ending fits what we got before, but the payoff isn't worth wading through all the shit in its current form. Blogpost time. 1/2

2/2 Temari best girl. Not that Ohba'd agree.

There is no easy way to fix the story, I think. A lot of plot needs a major rewrite. I'd start with making Cancerman the MC of the first half. Mirai gets introduced shortly after, functionally being adopted by the Mukaido family. Metrosexual is still the bad guy, but get no white arrows and has to scheme more. In fact, drop the white arrows as a concept, possibly only leaving them to Nasse and Mirai who's unwilling to use them anyway until the very end.

Introduce fewer candidates, so that you don't have to murder four of them at the start. One or two is enough, flesh them out better instead. Yoneda and Temari introduced throughout the first half, but they mostly work in the background and don't join the main forces. Cancerman and Metrosexual still effectively kill each other. Mirai gets promoted to MC and takes care of the Mukaidos.

The second half is Mirai vs Yoneda. Susumu is a wildcard, while Nakaumi becomes Yoneda's sidekick again. Some kind of additional challenge (solving puzzles? finding objects) is preented to the selection, so that we don't end up with endless fruitless debates. Make the challenge thematic to the candidates emotional cores. Yoneda dies and the final confrontation is Mirai vs Nakaumi, carrying the legacy of Mukaido and Yoneda. Whoever wins, the God does nothing in the end and life goes on.

Saki is not a candidate, and gets gradually introduced. First in flashbacks, then Mirai meets her in person, then she learns about the God stuff and gets granted wings and arrows. Make her rescuing Mirai at the end more poignant. Have her break down red arrow control at some point to show how uniquely strong their love is. Shame about losing out on Revel, him being the only interesting angel, but them's the breaks.

I'll be honest, I started skimming chapters after the 1st stadium namek unless it felt like things were finally happening. I'd never read it before this storytime, though I knew the ending, and I knew it was supposedly bad. But before reading I thought it would only derail towards the end.

It's baffling how poorly constructed this manga was out the gate. From the asinine rules, to the pathetically passive motivations of the protagonists, the random fixations that were only detrimental to the tone (looking at you super suits), and the shallow, pedantic pontificating on god that would make even the biggest fedora tipper cringe. It feels like the brainchild of a sheltered 13 year old who thinks suicide is hella epic. For it to come off the back of a guy who wrote one of the best edgy mindgame series and a manga about the rules of making manga is unreal.

You can write great suicidal characters. Suicide isn't motivated by apathy, rather by pain and desperation. People in pain recognize problems with the world. Desperate people are willing to do drastic things. Having an entire 2nd stadium namek for the final candidates to sit around and debate how little they'd do if they could warp creation to their desires might be the biggest joke in any death game manga.

I agree with every post that said Ohba never realized he wasn't writing a weekly manga. This manga would have been hard axed in 2 volumes without their star power. The editor must have been a pathetic yes-man. The ending is either Ohba maxing out on pretentious dabbling in themes he can't grasp or getting mad at the audience and deciding to tear it all down. Maybe both.

I'm glad it's over. I'm glad we suffered through it together.

I can actually see how this kept going during the metropoliman stuff. Yeah it was bad, but it wasn't so bad it was unreadable, it was just kinda cheesy and full of asspulls with questionable pacing but I've read worse. The fact it had "action" mixed in with it's awkward philosophy probably carried it in ratings.
And as good as some of the ideas were in the second half, the pacing and writing really pull any of the good down to awful. The ending is just a sum of the flaws.
Literally could have ended last chapter and people would have been happy with that ending, but this last chapter is going to actually be why people remember this shit.

I have to say reading it daily instead of the whole thing over 3 days has made me realize just how glacially slow it is though. Like most of us here, I'm sure the readers following it were doing so just out of morbid curiousity of how it was going to end.

unironically if platinum end finished last chapter with >>280533060 as the last page I'd say it had the best final page.

Instead Platinum end actually ended with an asspull spread and feels kinda shit, combined with the rest of the story feeling shit.
Bakuman ends just so suddenly with no epilogue at all that it was disappointing I at least expected it to end with them at the altar. Ending with "I do" would have been way more enjoyable.
Death note's ending was honestly better out of the three.
Reversi was kind of fitting, I liked it more than bakuman's ending but without really knowing the story can't tell if it's the best of the 4, which if it was would have been ironic.

I honestly wonder what's the meaning behind the end.
Because if you go by the "Yoneda was right, but was mislead by Muni's lie that God dying wouldn't affect Humanity" angle, it implies that Humanity itself will also reach the suicidal light creature state.
If so, one could consider Nakaumi killing everyone as mercy (mass) killing, which for the folk who ties immortality and torment together, might be a good ending (a platinum ending even).

I wish the world could have been gaslit into thinking this was good, so we'd get a "DN How to Read it" equivalent with PE, it would have been insightful to peer into Ohba's creation process of it.

Immortal beings are born, they are basically Kars and can't die. They seed life in the hopes someone can end their torture. The seed sometimes has to clean the board. Super beings realise Earth wont work and they fuck off to another planet.

Platinum is generally seen as the purest and highest metal, but in ancient alchemy it was regarded as the fusion of gold and silver.
Which could be in reference to the fusion of God and Nakaumi.
And the End part would be the fact that the fusion ended itself.

>start with Nakaumi becoming god
>have him reflect on his life up until that point, alongside musings on life in general (without any of the series' retardation)
>give him actual inner conflict with god before the act happens
>present the ending as a complete tragedy born out of his folley, ending with eerie silence

But even regardless of that, one should have at least a passing interest, right? How can you have that towards a series you have never heard anything about? (though I was exaggerating a bit before. I have heard of one of those four, but I am not interested in it at all)
For me these dailies is not about reading something new, but about reading something I know with a bunch of other people together.

I was waiting for something worse. This was kind of baffling but i was let down. I thought this would be a giant trainwreck but to me at least, wasn't. Maybe my expectations are just that low in regards to this manga but i don't think this ending is that egregious when looking at the manga as a whole. It always had a kind of nihilistic or atheist worldview despite a "god" existing, the characters always made stupid decisions and were hardly likeable. The fact that aliens/"creatures" exist is out there but i'm too tired to be surprised by it. I'm glad i read it (because i got to experience it with others) but i wouldn't recommend this to anyone that's for sure.

To be honest, yeah something like that. The chosen god candidate was already a mentally unwell suicidal kid so him killing himself wasn't a shock. The planet being doomed is a big thing but i couldn't care less because noone lived there that i cared about. Also an ending where everyone dies i feel isn't that special no matter how many pages/chapters we spent on them. Maybe the story just brunt me out but i could barely give a shit about this ending.

NTA but with all the focus on suicide, the death of god and whether the creature created humanity or the other way around, the ending feels very consistent to the themes of the series. A trainwreck suggests that things have gone off the rails, but this is more like the train following the tracks all the way to the end to reach the logical conclusion of the concepts it tried to explore on the way there. I don't particularly like the ending since it's a pretty dark way to conclude things by killing all life on earth, but it's not like this was a happy series to begin with. It begun with suicide and it ended with suicide. Things came full circle, so it's not much of a wreck.

Rather than the ending, a much bigger issue with the series is that it's very meandering and the characters are largely unlikable. I didn't even care about any of them dying at the end, especially the main duo.

Objectively speaking, the ending is a clusterfuck, i think it's both the context surrounding it and me being ambivalent are the reasons why it doesn't hit that hard. The pacing is off like this anon >>280568462 pointed out, why would you dedicate so many pages to random people vanishing, we already get what's happening but also focusing on established characters isn't better. Temari feels kind of like a new character with her being mindwiped so i don't feel anything when she disappears, Yoneda outstayed his welcome and was more annoying than entertaining to me at the end, Mirai and Saki are just as dull as they were in the middle of the story. Every other character is simply dead and not mentioned. This is probably my main concern, to me characters are the most important thing in a series and aside from a couple of them they were all meh and those that i liked got killed. The premise wasn't as strong as Death Note or as relatable as Bakuman. The art of the characters were gorgeous but the panelling wasn't that interesting and the action was a lot of time confusing because of the wings.

Something that bugs me here is how little, let's say "death game" mattered, or the candidates for that matter.
You start off with your MC and heroine, fine. Then you introduced an evil, unrelatable character and not 1, not 2, but 3 of the 12 candidates are fed to him for no reason. (Well, the reason is to make him a threat vs. the MC being given the strongest power from the start, but come on)
Cancerman and Ugly are brought in mostly as a way to deal with Metropoli, and die by the end of this arc.
You then get the rest, leading up to Yoneda.
At no point do these parts intersect, it feels very... episodic? Except you really only get 2 or 3 episodes. The only, brief intersection here is Trump Mask, who doesn't actually do anything. He might as well not have been in the Metro arc, and nothing would've changed.

I guess if you want to compare this to Death Note, it also does follow a similar format, it's very cleanly cut into separate sections, with the exception of Mello coming in at the end, but it also features 3 different factions at most anyways.
A "game" like this, if you can even call it that by the end, should have more moving parts to keep you guessing.

Well This was a Platinum Endโ„ข alright, honestly I kinda enjoyed because I always heard how shit the ending was but I really DIDN'T dislike the manga on an overall level.

My main grip with the manga is that Mukaido maybe should've been introduced earlier in the manga before the whole Stadium shenanigans with Metropoliman, and killing half of the candidates immediately was a really waste

Susumo was a fucking retard in the end, he's introduced as some cute lolibait at first then ends up being just a fucking retard and I don't even understand how he ended up red arrowing Metro.

Aside from that I don't really have that much of an issue with the manga and I was expecting much worse, sure everyone complains about Mirai being the MC but I felt his methods were pretty down to earth for a guy who was pretty much a walking depression in a nutshell

Also in Death Note, while the arcs are cleanly cut so to say, they clearly had impact on others and consequences while here other than characters not being in the story anymore nothing else really changes. Characters don't really figure things out or if they do, it only ever matters in that chapter. The fact that a bunch of god candidate stuff was livestreamed it doesn't feel like that mattered since all the politicians and leaders got arrowed so they were non-factors. Not-Light was also there i guess.

Mirai may have been a realistic depiction of a depressed teen, but that doesn't make him interesting. A lot of decisions are made around him and usually the plot's driving force is also someone else. I did like some of his moments (his first flight and being overwhelmed when he survived his suicide attempt, puking all over himself when fighting Metropoliman, his decision to do nothing as god) but thkse moments were too far and few-between so overall he was just dull. The fact that his love interest was also mostly dull didn't help. He also didn't have entertaining interactions with the rest of the squad like Yoneda or Temari.

I've been writing about it before but in the end the arrows still had range issues and they had to identify the candidates. If Metropoliman had to run around himself and have physical escape plans etc then he wouldn't have been as overpowered. We'd also avoid that whole sequence with Mirai and Mukaido flying around invisibly in the fun house which was just dumb.

Ideally no white arrows either. Just a whole series of mind games of people using their red arrows on people and manipulating things for their own goals to win the contest.

Tanemura Arina is a good example of this on the shoujo side. Her magnum opus was Full Moon, then after two huge hits, she serialized the hot mess that was Shinshi Doumei Cross, before being finally freed from the shackles of her Ribon contract. She moved to Margaret, where she likely had freedom as a huge name, in combination with that magazine's low editorial standards, and drew more hot messes there. Then when she moved to Melody (a Hakusensha publication, and shoujo/josei-wise their editorial standards are much higher), where she finally was able to serialize something good again.

So what was the purpose of this manga? Why did he open the plotline that Nasse is a hybrid of a native lifeform from Earth even if it just ends like this?
I know the entire manga is an allegory for suicide but I just can't comprehend why he did those things the way he did.
I get that the scientist meant that ''humans produced god'' as more like ''an immortal species created god to kill them'' but he just drops this and everyone dies. It's like the rest of the manga is telling us to keep fighting, to learn to value life and live in spite of the problems with Hajime being the best proof of that as someone that achieves something while Metroman dies for nothing but then he just kills everyone off
>>280569234
>>280570432
It actualy felt like it was building for something like people needing to value life. Not even a matter of spirituality or religion. Metroman gets the power to kill anyone and uses with reckless abadon ending up manipulated and killed, the MC chosen by Nasse gets the same power and constantly refuses it he valued life and his own life but in turn he couldn't compromise with it becoming god. And then they put a boy that didn't value even himself in the throne, which ends with everyone dead.
There is something here for interpretation but then right after it just kills any prospective message and ends like ''living is really bad and you should be thankful you get to die''.

Yeah, we shouldn't force it up but it is disappointing this thread doesn't hit bump limit despite there being interest. Thought more, especially the new readers would have been flabbergasted by the ending.

It's not fair that they're only shilling the first half characters. Yuri will sue them for discrimination.

I think at least a few people dropped it and didn't care to come back for the end. Even in a storytime, the pacing is abyssmal and most of the characters are unlikeable so i get why people wouldn't stick with the manga until the end.

Honestly, I think the ending was okay. Not amazing, but okay.
All of the God candidates shared the flaw of being selfish and unwilling to compromise or sacrifice.
They all shunted the responsibility of godhood onto a suicidal kid who only really took the position because he had nothing to live for.
This outcome was inevitable, and their unwillingness to sacrifice anything led to them losing everything.
