A marvel of military technology. A wonder they didn't steal that from the Greeks as well...

Ask something if you can think of it

Tower or field?

I remember this part by how hopeless it was. This is what happens when you face a commander with superior resources who leaves nothing to chance.

IRL Leopold's (a kind and just-hearted ruler) army was ambushed by thousands of Swiss Taliban armed with the cutting-edge weaponry of the day (Halberds), probably provided by his geopolitical enemies. The Swiss insurgents broke every wartime convention of the day, taking no prisoners and killing even fleeing men. To this day they have never apologized.

Peasant scum no different than beasts

>About 1,500 men were said to have been killed in the attack. According to Karl von Elgger, the Confederates, unfamiliar with the customs of battles between knights, brutally butchered retreating troops and everyone unable to flee. He records that some infantry preferred to drown themselves in the lake rather than face the brutality of the Swiss

It makes a lot of sense that the Austrians would storm the castle. I keep saying this, but sieges are miserable things for both sides. Even the attacker suffers. They spend all day performing tedious probing attacks to tie up defenders while disease can decimate encamped armies. Plus, loads of armies run out of food before the siege is won.
It's also an extremely nice detail that the trebuchet mechanism doesn't operate by cutting rope. That would be completely ahistorical. After all, if you cut rope every time you fire, you'd have to constantly be making new rope. Real trebuchets used hooks and pulleys to shoot. Though, they wouldn't say "Fire" when it was time to shoot. They'd say "Loose".

Can I choose desertion? If not, do I know that the tower is going to cave in? If so, field. If not, tower

Why would they say "Loose" if they're trying to win? Ahistorical much?

thanks, OP. Counterweight trebuchets were created in the eastern Mediterranean during the 12th century, between the Byzantines, Turks, and Arabs, though the specifics of their exact creation is still unclear -- needless to say, the Crusader states didn't appreciate them

Trebuchets are insane
Scaling something like a crossbow up to siege weapon power is a pretty sensible leap of logic seeing as it's mechanical to begin with, but a trebuchet is scaling up a fucking Shepard's weapon to the size of a building and it actually working is mental

Once the siege has started, you're kinda fucked. There's not much you can do on the strategic level aside from wait. Sure, you could move people from Tower A to Tower B, but I don't think it'd make much of a difference
