Do the japs have any concept of ADHD or do they just think "I knew someone weird like this once" when writing these sorts of characters

For me its kaorin x sakaki. Their dynamic is super cute and I think they'd make a good couple.

Kaorin doesn't love Sakaki, she loves the person she assumes Sakaki to be. Never once does she try to learn who she really is and what she likes, Kaorin just fawns over a person who exists exclusively in her own head.

They know it exists and its usually beaten/disciplined out of kids around Junior Highschool age once the crushing reality of societal expectations and social hierarchy becomes their reality.
Eventually they dont have time to be ADHD when they're doing 部活 6-7 days a week for 3-8 hours a day.

They're fully-aware of neurodivergent traits, but I really doubt any of those were in mind when Azumanga Daioh was written. As "autism-coded" or "ADHD-coded" the Azumanga cast is, that's something applied to them after-the-fact by fans. Osaka can just as easily be interpreted as airheaded and odd, or Tomo can just as easily be read as energetic and brazen, without AUDHD trauts being read-in. If anything, in fact, part of Azumanga Daioh's charm is that the interactions between characters straddle the line between dumb and mundane juuust~ enough to seem like conversations between real high-schoolers. People talk about dumb shit or utter nonsense all the time just to chat. Azumanga probably wouldn't come across as "gee, how relatable" if Kiyohiko Azuma were purposefully writing the cast as the autism spectrum incarnate.

In the current DSM, ADD was merged into ADHD because they found that even if people with ADD don't exhibit external hyperactive behaviors, their brains are just as active as people with ADHD. Or something like that.
