MHA has always been around the popularity of Haikyuu, KNB, TPN, AssClass and Bleach when it came to Japan. 250K-300K before the anime, 500K after the anime, 600K around the final few years and 800K after the series finally ended. Haikyuu was always around 650K-700K, Kuroko was around 600K and TPN was around 500K-550K. Death Note, HxH, Naruto, JJK, KNY, DB, OP and Slam Dunk are the notches above it. Its international appeal is what puts it to the levels of success as the latter. BC is the only series it completes stomps over, also given the fact they came around its easy to compare.

Dragon Ball, One Piece and Naruto doesn't need the main guy front and center to function.
