I don't really disagree, but I think Tolkien already wrote a pretty bleak, dark setting. We get to see a few rare protected areas of it prominently so it doesn't always seem so, but the large victory the heroes achieve in it was a rare anomaly after basically slowly, gradually losing to evil for literally thousands of years, until almost all the beautiful and heroic things of the world were crushed, dominated, or corrupted.
