Here' a cool idea:
If Shax could partially take away senses, then it would open many possibilities. Imagine a scenario where you do not get stunned, but your body stops regulating heat because it does not feel getting warmer. You don't sweat, so you might end up overheating and collapsing. You might think you are under some binding spell, or mind spell, but it was just your own body sabotaging you. Sure, though the question always remains with long term stories is How much of it is deliberate chekov's guns and how much of it is just creating interesting characters that can be skillfully attached to later storylines.

Largely unconnected, but I always think of FFXIV for this sorta thing. Basically everyone loves the Ascian storyline and their tragedy and all that. But for the first like 8 years of the game, they were just spooky bad guys in robes. We didn't learn anything about who they really were or what their history was until Shadowbringers. But they drew on enough established elements to make them compelling. Similarly, "Answers" was the initial main theme for the game and it sorta just worked as a "Fuck, war sucks" song. But then Endwalker repurposed it into being Hydaelyn's theme and tied to her struggle pretty well even though it almost certainly wasn't originally planned that way.

I could see it either way here I suppose.
