I have enjoyed both kinds of entertainment throughout my life and wouldn't want either to not exist.
The real problem with 4chan and the internet as a whole and really all human discussion/argument is that people have not been educated enough to understand the concept of thought terminating ideas.
A 4chan thread should be like a game of volleyball. One poster tosses out his idea, the next one catches it and rebounds and back and forth it goes until someone makes a good point and scores a goal and it continues until the thread dies.
Instead we get people who throw down thought terminating ideas like "something shouldn't exist and can't be good because it's edgy". Where do you even go from there? You can't bounce that back because there is nothing to play off of. What is edgy?
For most people it's just any violence in a story they don't like. Since every story is subjective I have no way to counter your concept of edgy. It's like playing volleyball and one side just sits the ball on the court and stands there. The game can't continue.
