Finally finished up S4 after stopping at episode 10 and forgetting about it till now, so I’m curious what people thought about Kei Gai turning ugly and getting ducked to death.
Personally I found it underwhelming.

I wish Butcher found a way to end the series in a way that would've been less rushed and contrived way but it was probably impossible.

Unfortunately it seems like sometime after S3 the series was cut short from having two full seasons to one season and one movie so it would've required a major rewrite since Urobuchi had a three season plan after S2. It was just easier to streamline things and we basically lost a season of Demon Realm worldbuilding.

Yeah I know. Although, I think he made a mistake by making S3 plot too complicated with the interdimesional stuff and the many, many new characters and plot threads. He should have kept it simple like S2. Oh well S1 is still a self-contained 11/10 for me, the rest is just bonus.

IMO, the season did a good job of showing how the demon realm disappointed Kei Gai's expectations and that her decision to abandon Shou Kun Rin left her without an ally in a world hostile to both her and her values. Faced with the inherent nature of demons that directly clashed with the kind of species nationalism she also touted drove Kei Gai to her limit, and her last stand was her attempt to chase her demonic ideal (transforming in the process) while also having a mental breakdown.

did they ever use the action part of bard's theme in s4 or the movie? i know they used the sad piano bit in the first half a few times but i cant recall the combat portion ever being used. heck i dont even think it was used in s3 past episode 1.

IMO she was at her greatest. A major part of this season was really driving home that the only person on the side of demonkind was truly Kei Gai, to the point that she qualifies as one of the 'ideal demons' that the Emperor wanted, and she was the only only pureblooded demon to manage the task, aside from random demon peasants who want revenge for their families. The clues were there always, really. She was always the one who wanted to play #2. She was a supporter, through and through, and she had a genuine human friendship in her backstory via that one story that didn't get adapted into a movie.

In that way, she is a tragic heroine for a cause nobody else cares for, and framing the way she and Duck interact as being demonic in nature, they have a doomed love.

The part about the Demon King trying to make the demons into what Kei Gai would probably consider pussies might have been an idea for the Season from the start. Kei Gai would also be the lone demon with any such ideals because she ultimately betrayed her sister, just like how the demon aristocrats keep trying to betray each other. Those might have been established from the start, and only the speed and frequency at which the nobles were killed changed once Season 5 was turned into a movie.
