Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the nineteenth volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>280509393

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.

In addition, I will be dumping the Inuyasha Special Chapter "Since Then" that came out around this time. Today, the scans I have of the chapter are fanscans.
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.280639708 >>280639743
Original title is ้ป’็Œซใ“ใฉใ‚‚ไผš which is more like "Black Cat Children's Association".

Furinkan notes that: "Kyokai no RINNE did not run in the next issue, instead Rumiko Takahashi published the special chapter of Inuyasha: Since Then to help raise funds for the victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown."

This is the special chapter I'll be dumping later. A number of retired series came back for special chapters as part of Shogakukan's "ใƒ’ใƒผใƒญใƒผใ‚บใƒปใ‚ซใƒ ใƒใƒƒใ‚ฏ" or "Heroes Come Back".

The woman's sash has the word "ใ“ใฉใ‚‚" or "child" on it. Presumably, it says ใ“ใฉใ‚‚ไผš in full. Also, Furinkan has a very silly note here, but I'll post it anyway:

"The event the black cats are asked to participate in is a "stamp rally" (ใ‚นใ‚ฟใƒณใƒ—ใƒฉใƒชใƒผ). This is a game where people travel around (sometimes from train station to train station or tourist destinations within a city) collecting stamps. The first person to fill their book and arrive at the finish line is declared the winner."

ใ‚นใ‚ฟใƒณใƒ—ใƒฉใƒชใƒผ (sutanpuraree) being a loanword from the English term.

Per Furinkan: "The ghost that Suzu brings out to torment Kuroboshi III is Sadako Yamamura (ๅฑฑๆ‘่ฒžๅญ) from the Ring films. In the manga she comes out of a television set like in the films, in the anime she is shown coming out of a pipe."

I guess they changed it for the anime adaptation of this chapter. Wonder why. I completely forgot about this gag, so this makes me feel better about using a Sadako-like ghost for my Rumic Nendoroid display thing...
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.280640109 >>280640194
>>280640004
He'll be okay. Also, phasmophobia is a good bit of localization. The original was just "้œŠๆๆ€–็—‡" or "spirit phobia" with ้œŠ being our usual term.
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.280640194 >>280640218 >>280641241
>>280640109
Another somewhat vague notes by Furinkan:

"After the cats abandon Kuroboshi III they run through a series of torii gates (้ณฅๅฑ…). These are Shinto archeways typically painted a reddish-orange color. They mark the entrance to a sacred space.
The ghost that gives the cats their first stamp has on a "ghost hat". These have many names ..."

One of them is tenkan (ๅคฉๅ† ) and it is associated with depictions of ghosts in Japanese culture. It presumably came about due to a trend in burial clothing historically.

Aw, Rokumon. I will say, her mom (age 39)'s reaction makes sense to me. But honestly, Rinne's poverty is one of those things that doesn't really make much sense if you think about it too long because someone would definitely step in to help in a much bigger way than a few gifts here and there. Then again, it is Japan and the basic idea is that Rinne really does put every extra yen into his debt. Even though he probably shouldn't.

>>280640702
Just how it goes. I don't want to bump my own thread too much if there's not much to add to the volume itself. And hey, the Mao anime got announced so there was plenty of Rumic discussion on the board.

Sakura's line was "ใœใƒผใŸใใชๆ‚ฉใฟใ ใ‚ˆใ€‚". Or "That is an extravagant problem" or "That is a luxurious problem". I can't deny that the phrase chosen by localization doesn't sum it up well, even if it feels of an era.

The red thread of fate (้‹ๅ‘ฝใฎ่ตคใ„็ณธ) is an idea you probably have heard of in a more metaphorical fashion and it apparently stems from Chinese mythology. Anyway, it basically says what it means here but it usually is an invisible thing that is always there.

She also similarly just yelled ใƒ–ใ‚ตใ‚คใ‚ฏ! which seems to also mean ugly. Apparently, ใƒ–ใ‚น is used for women while ใƒ–ใ‚ตใ‚คใ‚ฏ is used for men.

Also, they are using the trees off of the fifth tier, it seems. The ๅณ่ฟ‘ใฎๆฉ˜ or mandarin orange tree and the ๅทฆ่ฟ‘ใฎๆกœ or cherry blossom tree. Saino if spelled ๆ‰่ƒฝ seems to mean "talent" (not sure if that's the joke here). Momohara might be "peach source" or "many sources"?

I have no idea what Tsubasa is referring to. I don't know if he's referring to the names listed or the other guy's line. The Japanese just said "ๆญŒ่ฉžใฟใŸใ„ใ ใชใ€‚" which just means "It's like a lyric". So, VIZ seems to think it means the names, but that might be wrong. Furinkan notes that: "The devil balloon in this chapter resembles Tsunodaishi. It is perhaps a reference, but also it may be a coincidence and merely worth mentioning the vague resemblance. Tsunodaishi (่ง’ๅคงๅธซ), according to legend, is actually the 10th century monk Ryogen (่‰ฏๆบ) the head abbott of the temple Enryakuji. It was said that Ryogen was able to turn into this creature, alternatively described as an oni or a yaksha in order to banish evil-doers. His demonic alias, Tsunodaishi, means "Great Horned Master" and appears on ofuda paper talismen. The Tendai sect still distribute ofuda featuring Tsunodaishi."

The term Rinne used here was "ใƒŸใƒ‹ใƒกใ‚ฌใƒใŠใƒขใƒฌ็”ท". ใƒขใƒฌ appears to mean "leakage". Swapping "chibi" to "more" seems to be the difference.

Furinkan has this note: "After Rinne reveals that Matsugo wet his pants he says their classmates would have taken to calling him "ใƒŸใƒ‹ใƒกใ‚ฌใƒ ใƒขใƒฌ็”ท" (Mini-Megane Moreo) or "little glasses-wearing pants-wetter"."

Also, the cutesy sign that says "anoyo" or "other world" or "afterlife" had the logo in English in the original manga. ๅ›ฃๅญ means dango or dumpling.

Furinkan notes that: "The strange illustration that is shown wearing the dog collar is actually from a painting of Jesus Christ known as Ecce Homo."

Of course, that is a phrase that shows up a lot. Anyway, this specific drawing is a reference to the botched restoration of the Garcia Martinez painting in a church that basically went viral in 2012. I remember when this went viral, so it is really odd seeing what I felt was a somewhat contemporary meme in a Rumiko Takahashi manga, but that dates me more than anything. I just read the Wikipedia page for this and it seems the botched restoration and the subsequent hubbub about it did bring tourists into the city, so there's a happy ending to all this.

By the way, Tsubasa's lines in the second panel were "ใŠใพใˆใ“ใฃใกใ‹?" and "ๆ„›ใชใฎใ‹?". So, the second line is translated directly while ใŠใพใˆใ“ใฃใกใ‹? means something to the effect of "Are you this way?" which I assume has a similar connotation but I'll admit I am not an expert.

ใใ‚Œไปฅๆฅ (Sore irai) or "Since Then" was published on February 6th, 2013 in Shonen Sunday. As such, it was published around the time of these chapters. It was published five years after the end of Inuyasha. As mentioned earlier, this special chapter was to help raise funds for the victims of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown. This was one of many retired series that came back for special chapters as part of Shogakukan's "ใƒ’ใƒผใƒญใƒผใ‚บใƒปใ‚ซใƒ ใƒใƒƒใ‚ฏ" or "Heroes Come Back". All these specials were collected in a book of the same name.

This translation is a fanscan. Of course, as unofficial fanscans and translations, they have their own issues but at the least we don't have to worry about flipped art. The Inuyasha I had posted in the story time was the official translated VIZ one, so do not expect everything to necessarily line up the same way. Not that VIZ was super consistent either. I know one of the choices by the fanscan here confused me a bit, so I'll mention it when it comes up.

As for this chapter in general, I decided to do this little epilogue after finishing Inuyasha because in some ways, I feel this would've been a poor way to finish the Inuyasha storytime. I think the context of it being a bit of a nostalgic extra chapter is really a big part of the content and tone of the work. I don't think it is bad, but it definitely feels just like "a typical Inuyasha" chapter than anything else.

So, this little translation note is a bit confusing but I get where they are coming from. Anyway, the thing in this chapter is called ๆ นใฎ้ฆ– in Japanese. Furinkan says that this translates to "Root Head". This seems logical given that the creature is clearly made of a bunch of roots. I also will add that ้ฆ– can mean neck or nape in Japanese. In context, I think head is better.

But root also means source so the fanscan seems to think that's why it is called that. I don't think that's accurate.

This is actually just a mistranslation. This first panel apparently created a misconception in the fandom for a while. This is not the name of Sango's youngest child. The original line was actually ็ฅ็€ใ€ๅญๅฎˆใ‚Š้ ผใ‚€ใ€‚which means "Kohaku, watch the kids" or "Kohaku, I am entrusting babysitting to you". Komori (ๅญๅฎˆใ‚Š) means "babysitting". ๅญๅฎˆ is a name, hence, the confusion.

The kid did get a name in Yashahime, but in Inuyasha, there's no name.

I definitely can understand why people find Kaede's line here silly. Basically, we've gone through all this development already. I am not going to quibble over when Kagome no longer needed to borrow Kikyo's power, but let me tell you, it wasn't this epilogue.
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.280648521 >>280648563 >>280648875
>>280648478
Anyway, you can see why this whole thing might be read as a bit regressive in a way. Inuyasha's "hiding stuff about Kikyo" doesn't really line up with what we saw in this chapter and is very different from the stuff we saw in Inuyasha. But that is a fairly uncharitable reading. I think it is best to take this chapter as what it is.

Which is what is said here. It is nostalgia. Just that. Rumic gesture and undeserved "sit" command.

kaede said "already" not "finally" though? also the "has been" tense (there's a name for that tense i just don't remember) is something you learn at higher levels
a cursory look at google to remind myself shows it's a form that overlaps with other interpretations
but this is just speculation on my part for why the fan translator wrote it that way since i don't know what the raws were
kind of feels like japanese past tense is the only one that's definitive... but then again i vaguely recall in class there being a particular sentence structure where they use past tense where we would've used present tense...

A: After a long time I've drawn Inuyasha. I hope you enjoy it."

>>280648822
Yes, I get that. It just feels like a really goofy thing to say after so much of the manga going over how she's her own person. Kaede in some ways expressed that same sentiment in Chapter 50. 50. This is effectively chapter 559.

Hm. Looking into what Furinkan has to say, they mention that for Rin-ne, "Chapter 50 featured a computer generated background, marking Takahashi's first known foray into the use of computers with her artwork." In a Mao interview, she said: "I think I will continue to draw my manuscripts in analog form" so I guess at some point, she did switch to digital for her tones. A little sad, but makes sense.

>You can see a bit of a misromanization. Yes, the sinigami was written in English in the original panel as well.
well no, it's not actually misromanized
it's just a different romanization scheme
hepburn is the current one that's popular nowadays in english-speaking countries, but japan itself uses that or this one
>https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kunrei-shiki_romanization
or even other ones
there's older systems that you can see in books and historical names
jyaken for example is not actually wrong, it expresses which kana are used, and i guess therein lies the question with japanese romanization: how much do you want to convey the actual kana used, and how much do you want it to reflect how it's pronounced? such as with ใฅ and ใš both written as zu in hepburn because that's how it's said, but this also hides which kana it was written with, as opposed to writing them as du and zu
in fact, i have to type du to get ใฅ when i type on my keyboard, and i have to type di to get ใข
it's a whole thing (and then there's an even *bigger* thing with chinese romanization)

Just in general, honestly. Of the horror manga I've read, one that stuck with me tremendously was a very short thing called The Giant from Seeds of Anxiety (Fuan no Tane).

the nice thing about going forward in time is that the scans are becoming more findable
there's a site i've used that has sunday issues from 2013 listed *but* the links were to ryushare which is now defunt, however i think some aggregators must've found those when the site was active and were able to include the og color page
eventually we should get to a point where the download site is an active one

but nope, they have the same scans
i even found and posted one more than they did: the chapter 125 color page (chinese tl)
hopefully they kept posting the original color pages though
