Why did the Cell Saga get so much hate?

>Gohan's arc making no sense (he was never a pacifist, he was willing to fight when it mattered, he even put his life at risk to save some random namekian child he didn't even know)

>everyone can become a Super Sayian instead of Goku being the one of the prophecy which was a big deal during the Namek arc
>the fact that some random scientist in a secret lab was able to create power levels that rival those of a fucking legendary transformation of an alien warrior race

Those are the main reasons off the top of my head, I'm sure there are more.
It's a fun arc, it just makes little sense narratively. Cell was cool.

i enjoyed it. i went into it knowing almost nothing about DBZ. i knew who Goku was, his fight with Freiza. that was about it.
so for me, Androids and Cell WAS DBZ and it was fucking cool. Vegeta becomes super saiyan just to job to Android 17, then Piccolo gets his power up and finds hes evenly matched. if anything the Cell saga is way too long, takes forever to get to the tournament which itself is a fuckload of episodes. It has the perfect emotional denouement with Goku passing the torch to Gohan, his near defeat at Cells hand and the unlikely comeback with an 11th-hour assist by ultrajobber Vegeta. So many emotional highs.

It doesn't, though

I could see some people giving it shit for constantly changing who the big bad is and not feeling like it has a solid planned direction, but that's why I like it: The status quo and who is allied with who is constantly shifting, there's a great sense of mystery as stuff plays out, you can never expect what will happen next, etc

The Buu arc is kinda similar but it doesn't really work as well.

The only part of the Cell/Androids arc I really disliked was Vegeta allowing the villains to power up because of his arrogance twice in a row, both with letting 20 activating 17+18 and letting Cell capturing 18. It was incredibly weak writing especially with how Vegeta acted during the Namek arc

This was one of the biggest problems with the Cell Saga to me. Frieza was talked up like the strongest being in the universe, and the next threat after that are a couple of robots from Earth. Bulma's cartoonishly smart, if androids could be that powerful then she definitely would've been able to make some herself and solve pretty much any of the arcs throughout the series.

I think that's part of his character development though. Vegeta had always planned to one day kill Frieza, and came to believe himself to be the legendary super saiyan, but Goku beat him to the punch and was the one to avenge their race, and that tore him up inside. After achieving super saiyan himself, he had everything to prove, and let his arrogance take over. I did think Cell suddenly wanting a tournament instead of killing everyone after absorbing 18 was stupid however. Especially since it wasn't even a tournament, and he dropped the whole pretense halfway through his fight with Goku. It was like an excuse to delay the climactic battle long enough for the others to catch up to Cell's level.

I know it's "part of his character development" and I can sort of excuse it for the Androids, but the Cell thing is pretty indefensible. The worst part about it is that it's not even some psychological ploy by Cell to play on Vegeta's ego, Cell is literally coping about losing and Vegeta bends over backwards to accommodate him.

my recollection may be a bit hazy, but afaik cell gets beaten up and in desperation activates his self-destruct mode and goku tp's them to king kai's planet, whereupon cell explodes and absorbs goku at the same time which regens him to full, and now within an episode he's strong enough to beat gohan up and there's no indication that's he's changed
from an outsider's perspective it's like an asspull matryoshka doll and goku dies for no reason. i'd be mad as well
