Why is Clannad peak anime romance? What went so right here?

The romance in Clannad was weak as hell. You can hardly call them a pair when they don't even fight or try to prank each other

Peak romance would be Spice and Wolf and Nodame Cantabile. The pair really stands equal in authority and makes up for what the other is lacking

I think you posted the wrong couple.

Kyou's route is where actual romance happens in Clannad and while I don't think it's peak, it's still the best route in the new game section

20 years on and the Clannad anime finale is still one of the greatest insults to the intelligence of its viewers I've ever seen.

Because Tomoya and Nagisa actually had complimentary character growth, as well as them supporting each other through their toughest times. Moreover, 90% of it was baked into comedic SoL that made it feel natural.

Normally I would agree, but Tomoya was constantly pranking everyone except for her. And Nagisa was a nervous wreck around everyone except for him. They were a pretty good couple.

Natural skill increases in writing from the previous works.
People forget that Air Kanon and One vn's are almost the predecessors for the tropes in clannad.
Same thing with the animation studio, they already perfected their style by the time of clannad.

Holo was a bitch to Lawrence the entire time. The man was a saint for putting up with her. It's awful and painful to read, and they don't ever really become a couple after like 10 volumes. Being constantly emasculated is hardly "peak" romance. Shit tastes.

If you want to feel smarter then just pretend when Clannadman wakes up they're in a hospital and not their 2 room apartment.
