Whether there are any children matters too I think.
Two ancestors of mine were widowed very young in the Victorian age, but then again they were poor with young kids. For them iirc it was either give the kids up and support only themselves or find a man who would marry and take her kids too.

yeah, nope. it's a shoujo marketed as seinen to retards like you.
>Even so, most often that not the protagonist in female oriented manga isn't the hottest bitch around.
mc-s in shoujo have literally a line of hunks telling her how she's ACTUALLY more beautiful than popular bitch. women dont want to read about self-insert being mid, self-inserts must have a line of people fawning for them. see rumiko's works or anything else, really. the mid or ugly self-insert is NEVER actually ugly, she just was in need of a new haircut, a nice dress or stupid shit like that.
Anonymous No.280710737 >>280710776
>>280710545
They did a bad job at marketing then because only women and retards like you talk about the show.
Shoujo MC aren't popular from the start, you said so youself. They are introduced as grounded cuties and then they start attracting bishounen over time. Women don't want to self-insert as hot bitches, they want to self-insert as plain janes who are secretly hot bitches. Emma IS already popular with men.

i have a sister and i have read my share of shoujo. plain jane is not a rule, there's many shojou with popular mc from the start, see kodomo no omocha or ayashi no ceres. actually akane or kagome also have many suitors from the early start, so they never are treated as plain. because that's not what women like. in a shonen the mc must be badass and in a shoujo must be beautiful and popular with the right people. there's also evil people that wants to bring down our heroine, but then they always lose the popularity war. that's how it works.
Anonymous No.280711029 >>280711107

I agree but the shounen mc usually starts as the underdog. Emma being able to become a princess by chapter 3 is like Naruto being at hokage from the start.

Anonymous No.280711107

emma is still an underdog, she's just a maid after all. having all the hot nobles fawning over her is no different from naruto having the nine tail fox in him. they're both fated to win, this is what the mangaka tell us to.

Yes, and both those upper-class characters would have know that, of course, but viewed it in a different way. To their class there was less difference between a Scottish Lord and an English Lord than there was between either of those and a farm labourer, woodsman or miner. And at this stage in history that latter group of people would still have been conscious of their own local, regional culture and a identity before their national one (particularly in the more remote rural parts and in the most working class areas of the industrial cities). Whereas the nobility were all of one culture regardless of region and viewed the populace as first as crown subjects together (but separated by class), nationalities second and probably didn't think much at all about the lower classes' regional identities. This was most applicable to the actual old nobility and less applicable to the newly created rich mercantile upper class, but these groups eventually moved in mostly the same cultural circle.

Interesting to consider in light of where this all goes. Mom seems to want to get her poor daughter out of their house and is fine, perhaps even prefers, an unremarkable man from a non-peerage family. Given who sets the standards for that in her house, it's not surprising.

It's hard to imagine now, but there was an era where generally educating everyone was a big deal. Yes, I believe she was supposed to put the teacup on the table. This is probably related to the notion that maids are always supposed to make their presence invisible, even when in the same room as guests or their masters, so making herself visible, let alone touching one (even by accident), must be breaking an unwritten rule.

Wasn't it because gentlemen as a rule weren't allowed to earn a living wage and had to subsist solely on the profit of their investments? If they made bad investments their fortunes diminished while the new blood businessmen were flush with cash.

Not so much investments as land rents which weren't as profitable compared to going into business so inevitably land would be mortgaged for ready cash in order to maintain an aristocratic lifestyle which led to an accumulation of debts which would then lead to having to get some wealthy commoner to marry into the family to pay off the debts.

The romancing just seems so sudden and forced upon, and even more-so in the manga. The anime at least adds a little but more to the Crystal Palace date.

For those whom haven't yet seen the show. There's moments where Emma nestles close to William after getting scared by dinosaur diorama, and another moment where they loose eachother in the crowd. Not to mention There's more dialog when they're stuck overnight.

The manga has a little bit of trouble expressing Emma's love for Will. Or at least, why she ends ends up accepting his love over the rest.

It's probably just me nagging about pacing, but from Will meeting Emma, to walking her home a couple times and then buying her a handkerchief, shouldn't obligate the story to say "oh Emma's in love with Will now".

Emma is a poised and diligent maid with her responsibilities. She also has a narrow view of the world due to her upbringing and isn't the whimsical type as if she was influenced by fairy tales and romances. Falling in love, and falling in love ny first sight should be a foreign concept to her.

oh okay, well that's fair considering how early we are in the story but sometimes feelings are like that and to be fair emma did point out that william seems to enjoy just talking to her and isn't pushing her for a response which makes me believe the other suitors have only gone after her beauty which she sensed and/or have been pushy in their approach and emma is pretty timid and reserved so that might have turned her off completely.

Marry? Almost certainly not. I wouldn't say never, but it would've been very, vanishingly rare. Fool around with? Definitely, even in terms more "serious" than just taking advantage. This will color, though it's very rarely discussed this way explicitly, how people react to this relationship as it gets revealed to them. Most people understand these things happen, but don't think it can actually go anywhere serious, which is where the drama comes in.

I understand the sentiment here and am pretty much all for it because it's so sweet. But this does make me wonder about nerd things. Realistically, she would've altered her dress to keep up with the changing silhouettes, though it's entirely possible that it would no longer fit her anyway had she gained weight. The other thing is that the corset Emma is wearing would be different from the one Kelly wore in the 1860s(?), the bust was be lower and softer, vs the tits getting pushed up and flattened later on. I don't think it wouldn't quite fit right. There's also the question of: would it be worse to wear a plain, modern dress, or a nicer one that's 30+ years out of date?

I'll never understand why they went so far with corsets. I'm sure that letting it out a centimeter or two on each side would make the waist look much more natural, while still being very vavavoom, and the corset would be more comfortable as well. Instead, they went with a pencil thin waist and ruined the reputation of the device forever.

The waists weren't pencil thin though. Corsets generally shaved off around two inches of your waist, which is the same amount if you squeezed a measuring tape around your waist. Fatter/softer women would get a higher reduction, and tightlacing is like fancy high heels today: usually only for special occasions.

>>280794769
Different book, though I'd be surprised if that design wasn't mentioned in any of the references she used. The main difference is that the boning doesn't extend down to the hip, where there is instead less rigid cording for ease of movement. It's very popular as a modern design too.

The actual relationship between Emma and William is unexciting, most of their drama comes from external forces.
