I kind of disagree with this. Granted I am only 12 or so episodes in, but the jokes are just alright imo.
The anime seems to be focused more on relationships rather than emotion imo. Like they don't try to play with your emotions but more so show kindness and love through healthy relationships- which are achieved by controlling your emotions. At least that has been my understanding of the themes of the show so far. It is pretty great. It isn't my favorite anime but I've been enjoying it so far. Except Fern is kind of annoying at times but she's also overly protective of Frieren so I can kind of see why she behaves like that.

Brilliant and touching first episode followed by kind of dull and meandering...well, everything else.
All characters have emotional range of bricks, a few good fights and a lot more less good fights, zero narrative tension, plot kind of doesn't matter.

At the ball Sense is tending to Serie's every need as if she were her maid. Serie is just relaxing and eating whatever she wants. Frieren is just eating cakes too since she rarely has the opportunity to just eat whatever she wants. Fern and Stark are both confused about how Frieren can eat so calmly under the circumstances. She calls them over to join her and explains that Sein has tested the cakes for poison, so it's fine. Sein mentions that he tested with his magic, not his mouth and for Frieren not to use him to excuse her gluttony.
Stark mentions that he thought this place would be extremely dangerous and he had already prepared himself mentally to face death, but it all seems very normal. Frieren says he doesn't understand and that indeed this place is extremely dangerous, it merely seems calm and peaceful. And that's why Serie has handed operational command to Sense who is in her serious examiner mode, so she's extremely calm and collected. In addition, she points out that they know their enemy's faces from their intel, so they can make a move when necessary.
Fern is puzzled and asks why they don't take advantage of that to just attack preemptively and end this all at once. Frieren responds that that could work in a remote location, but not at the venue of the imperial ball, crawling with security teams. If they take the initiative to strike, the Empire will no doubt see it as a declaration of war by the CMA. So instead, they should enjoy cake and be ready for when the shadow warriors make their move. She adds that if they can't sit still, they can go dance to calm their nerves. Fern understands, so she calls out Stark and the two of them go off to dance.

The scene changes to some security guards at the venue. A new character, Lager (maybe) turns to his colleague, Klaw (maybe) and tells him to look at the CMA idiots goofing around. He's reminded by his companion that the CMA is actually watching them carefully, and at that moment Lager's eyes meet Sense's. He decides to wave to her and she responds by making a gesture towards her neck. He wisely decides to stop looking at her and talks to Klaw.
He asks why they were sent as security for this venue. Klaw responds that they were simply sent to hold down the fort and everything's fine as long as no one makes any funny moves. Lager is stunned and can't believe any one would try to start something with the monsters from the CMA. He thinks those people must not value their lives much. Klaw replies rather helplessly that they could end up being counted among those people. Lager is shocked and jokes about writing out a will, but he doesn't want to die. Klaw replies with a slight smile, but this isn't actually funny for them.
The scene changes to Kanone addressing Frase. She points out that there is currently no public information available on the shadow warriors and it's as if the organization had never existed in the first place. She asks if security at the venue won't be a problem if there's no information to work with. She replies that it's up to them. They must keep the venue secure. As soon as either the shadow warriors or the CMA make a move, they're to take action. Frase orders her to be ready to act on her orders and until then she's on standby.

The scene now shifts to the shadow warriors. (the spoiler guy doesn't really use the shadow warriors' names, so I hope I'm getting the characters correct) Clematis, Gazelle, Iris, and Routine are at the venue. Gazelle asks Clematis if he's not worried about them being out in the open like this. He tells him to stop worrying as the security of the venue guarantees that the CMA won't make the first move on them for the same reasons Frieren mentioned.
Iris expresses her doubts. After all, aren't they also a target of the security forces? What's to stop the security forces from making the first move and coming to get them? He responds that it depends on Frase's mood. She's a die hard fanatic of the Empire after all. The ball is not just a symbol of peace, but of the empire's strength. I gave it a shot but when cross referencing manga with anime there are too many inconsistencies.

In anime, Aura Vs. Frieren scene, the side-by-side shows Aura with a 540 pixel mana and Frieren with 110.
In Frieren true mana scene, scaling with perspective, we come to a Frieren @ correct height mana of about 2180 pixels.
But the manga givees something like Aura=365, Frieren (corrected size) 105, and Feieren true mana = 910 when I do comparisons and image scaling to match character sizes.

So there's no consistency in the visuals and it cannot be used to gauge anything.
Author's words have to be taken at face value, which leaves it all vague and unimportant.

Frieren seems to maintain her mana at the level it was when Flamme found her. This suggests she's about 1,100 years old and was 100 or so during the village attack.
We know Kraft is centuries older than Frieren and was an ancient hero about 1,500 years ago.
We know Serie is older than Kraft. We know she is from the "mythical era" but have no details.
We know Serie's mana suppression is essentially perfect
We know Serie suppresses her mana to just above Frieren's natural output.

I think Serie is 5,000 or 10,000 years old and is either the original Elf created by the Goddess or something close to it.

I watched it over the weekend. It was pretty good to be honest, I put it off for a long time because it gets talked about too much. It is certainly overrated though. I'd give it a 7-8/10. The first-class mage exam arc really devalued it for me. It become too battle-shounen-esque for my taste. It really felt like at some point in the second half the director changed or something, there were also some really out of character moments from time to time seemingly randomly. Overall, its ok.

I really liked it up until the magic exam too. The prior episodes set a pretty breakneck pace for everything, sometimes transitioning weeks or months regularly between episodes. Then you get to the magic exam and everyone kind of just accepts its something they have to go through just to travel further north and you end up spending every episode up until the end in one location accomplishing what is essentially a sidequest.

The tournament arc is indeed the worst as it made no sense whatsoever logically, there were a million ways to get around that city, the author should've just went with Fern wanting to get the 1st class mage certificate for future purposes, though I despise this tournament arc regardless, it just doesn't fit well in the overall setting.
