How much of a difference between the Light Novel source and the anime can you handle before it sticks out like a skyscraper in the middle of a small forest?

It's just an inevitability that changes and cuts need to happen in an adaptation like this. The difficult thing is making the adaptation actually make sense and flow well on its own, which I don't think they really managed to do here.

Honestly, I'm not impressed so far. The first mystery was an asspull - instead of presenting us with an actual puzzle, Monica simply pulled dirty gloves out of her ass like it's BBC's Sherlock, and that was the entire solution. Also, Monica's inability to talk is getting annoying now. All the long, labored pauses could be cut in half, and nothing would be lost. I get that it's a big part of her character, but they could've directed it better.

A proper lady wears gloves, especially white ones (though they are free to adorn them as they wish). It's a show of their nobility, because who gets their gloves dirty? Only commoners would, and only they wouldn't be seen wearing gloves like that all the time, either. The LN does mention this sort of stuff, but it's hard to translate that into the anime.

Monica's gloves are white and unadorned to go along with her cover story of being abused by her adoptive family. They're even not the right size for her, being slightly too big for her hands.
