I’m still on a reread marathon of the novels. It’s nice to go back and recap on stuff I’d kinda forgotten about. I just wrapped up Wavering, which is a pretty solid volume all around. Rereading the novels also emboldens the feverish intensity of my love for Yuki Nagato. My one and only waifu for life. No 3D woman can match even 0.001% of her perfection.
Oh, and the new book was good too. I read that one when Yen Press released it physically. I recommend checking it out. Intuition was also good as well.

With how Tanigawa seems to favor Yuki in his writing, I wonder if he would ever have Kyon choose her in the end? That sounds silly, sure, but there are plenty of endings where it feels like the author switched gears and did something that feels off-script. Common sense may say he would end up with the main heroine, but who knows what will actually happen?
In Love at First Sight, he even admits that he doesn’t want to see Yuki with another guy. Yet his feelings on Haruhi having a boyfriend sounded more wishy washy to me. And his thoughts on Asahina sounded more like she was his daughter, with how he’d have to resist stalking the guy. I’ve always seen his relationship with Asahina as half infatuation, half protective big brother.
What do other novel readers think of this? Is my interpretation off the mark? Or am I making sense?

When I first became acquainted with the series I believed and wanted that to be the case, and the part from Love at First Sight where he goes over his relationships with every SoS brigade member was a large reason as to why.

However eventually I came to realize that I much prefer Kyon and Nagato as incredibly close friends, whose love is platonic in nature, and platonic here means the actual definition of platonic love that Plato described, rather than the colloquial version, as Platonic love is the ideal form of love according to Plato, as not only do I believe how that is the best thing for them in particular and how it is what we are shown, but also because I really like it when a guy and a girl are depicted as just close friends rather than by default being romantic.

I think that kind of relationship is good for them too. But I still hold out hope for romance. Part of her certainly wants that connection. And Kyon would be best for her as someone that understands her well.
But romance or not, she definitely has a special connection to him that’s different from any of the other girls. His caring nature towards her, and how he always tries to understand her better is my favorite part of the series.
So him being with Haruhi romantically won’t feel like she lost or anything. She’ll always have something from Kyon that Haruhi doesn’t.

I started with the novels, and she always stood out because she barely spoke. Everything she said and did felt important. And her deeper feelings, or how Kyon interprets them, lead to the best moments in the series.
Haruhi is very in-your-face. She definitely has deeper stuff going on that she doesn’t vocalize, but I consider her practically a solved character by the end of volume 1. Volume 1 feels like a standalone story, and it focuses primarily on Haruhi. The rest of them don’t really add much to her aside from having her chill out, and developing her relationship with Kyon in an expected way.
I think the rest of the cast, not just Yuki, are more interesting than her for most of the series because of this. I still love Haruhi as the series goes on. But most of that is just because she’s really funny. She’s always saying something ridiculous, or is described as making weird faces.

She isn't a solved character however, you can see her and Kyon's relationship develop, aswell as her change in interesting ways.
The contrast between Sigh and Live alive being a prime example. There is also Kyon's extreme trust exhibited in Remote Island when he concludes Haruhi wasn't responsible based on his trust alone, contrary to all previous experiance (and is proven right!). In snow mountain, they hold a productive conversation for once, actually resolving misunderstandings via dialogue, in Love at first sight and especially Suprise she exhibits ever increasing care for brigade members and she conducts actions activly working towards her goal of staying with Kyon by forcing him to study etc.

Best short stories?
For me it’s Love at First Sight, Boredom, and Snowy Mountain. I’d toss in Live Alive, but the anime makes it feel underwhelming to reread without the song. The scenes after the concert are still good.

Bamboo leaf rhapsody is also really good if only due to how much it expands on the mythos, and its connection to Disappearance.

Also Im not sure if I would call Snowy Mountain Syndrome a short story, since its much longer than the other short stories, it alone is around half of Rampage, whereas a short story is usually a quarter of a novel long.

In general there are 3 different length stories, full novels like Melancholy and Disappearance, half novels, like Snowy Mountain Syndrome and Editor in Chief, and short stories like Bamboo leaf rhapsody or Remote island syndrome.

Then there is Intrigues which is like 50% longer than other novels, and Surprise which all together is the longest but is split into 2 separate volumes.

I’d say they’re just longer short stories. They are part of the short story compilation volumes. The one that’s harder to classify is Theater, since it’s made up of really old material for the first two chapters. But it’s also a full, coherent story arc.

Haven't watched this before. What's the deal with the whole watch order thing. Supposedly the original out-of-order release is superior, yet none of the torrents for this show seem to be in that order.

That's because they include the full show, only the first season has the jumbled order and when the second season was broadcast the first season was re-aired in chronological order.
The reason they weren't all in order in the first place was because the original light novels were themselves published and written out of order and to spice up the pacing.
Picrel is the 2006 order with the 2009 numbering added.
As an addendum, I still find "broadcast" and "chronological" to be retarded and confusing and don't know who should be slapped for coming up with it. Just say "2006" and "2009".

Because Haruhi is easily multiversal at a minimum, due to her affecting multiple timelines simultaneously, and if you want to get into dimensional scaling nonsense (you dont), the Data Overmind is described as being beyond time, which would make it 4d, and since Haruhi is clearly meant to be above it Haruhi scales to 4d and above, of course none of this makes any sense since the very concept of dimensional scaling is based on pseduoscience and a misunderstanding of what dimensions are.

As for Yuki, she is at least city level in terms of her hax due to claiming how she could manipulate the weather to make it rain, however I think she probably scales to at least planet level due to scaling to the data lifeform in Wandering shadow, which she says that even if it infected every dog on Earth wouldnt be enough to restore its primary functions, and this data lifeform is described by her as the equivalent of a virus if the Data Overmind is a human, and considering how she previously in Mysterique Sign stomped a similar kind of data lifeform, it is a safe bet to say how Yuki scales above these data lifeforms even as just an interface of the Data Overmind and has planet level hax in the form of her data manipulation.

I think Yuki with control over Haruhi’s powers makes her unstoppable. Like Goku wouldn’t stand a chance. In Theater she talks about how she can control it and do anything she wants. But Haruhi of course doesn’t realize what she has, and honestly even if she did I could see her having issues using it with the conscious precision that Yuki could. Plus she’s a normal girl at her core, where Yuki can take mortal damage and just undo it.
Her ridiculous, unknown power level is one of the funnier parts of the series because it hardly ever matters when she’s mainly just gonna use it to win a baseball game or something.

That short music video made me want some ONAs done in 3D with Noizi Ito’s art style. It would be unsuitable for season 3 for multiple reasons, but it’s a good look for something smaller. It’s nice to see the characters animated in the original novel style. I like the anime, but there are some odd quirks like Haruhi’s eyes being a little far apart.

I know this will sound weird, but it is quite incredible how much I feel I can relate to her, and I have seen other anons express a similar sentiment. Not just the general personality, but also stuff like word choices, where she looks and actions take feel so oddly similar that it almost seems like a statistical anomaly. I have only read a few books with characthers that get close to relatability, but not a single one is as close as her. It is hard to properly express how close to me it feels.

Maybe I have just developed esper powers and a hard hit to the right part of my head would fix me idk.

While I wouldn’t say I’m like her, she does embody a certain way of thinking and acting that I can relate to. Yuki is one of those characters that feels like a person. One of my favorite aspects of reading the novels blind years ago was progressively becoming more obsessed with her. She became the main character for me.

IMO the reason as to why you, I and others are able to relate to her so much comes for 2 main reasons.

1. She is an extremely accurate depiction of an autistic girl with alexithymia, the manner in which she generally acts and approaches things as such come across as not only highly relatable to us, but also cathartic due to her being a girl.

2. Her areas of interest being reading sci-fi books, computer science and video games, as well as just being curious about any random phenomenon she comes across makes me at least relate to her to an even more absurd degree

And lastly for me personally, her struggle with wanting to live a normal life where she is able to freely indulge in the things she came to love, is another point of extreme relatability that makes me view her as almost identical to myself in a way that simply baffles me every time I think about it.
