It is weird how Kubo never drew a solo color spread for Ichigo and Orihime, even on the final volume extras there wasn't a family drawing. Even Kishimoto drew NH and SS with their kids, but IH and RR get nothing from Kubo.

I've neither a Ichiruki or Ichihime shipper so maybe I've been in the wrong Bleach circles , but in my humble experience most people had no problem with Rukia ending up with Renji, but rather Orihime ending up with Ichigo, if that makes sense. Something something Rukia and Renji falling in love makes sense because they have a shared history and mutual chemistry. Compare this to Ichigo and Orihime's relationship which is portrayed as very onesided where Orihime is obviously in love with Ichigo but Ichigo doesn't really treat Orihime any different from any of his other nakama. THAT is why the two of them marrying at the end came as a shock, not JUST "noooo muh (insert ship here) was not endgame waah waah".

I like Rukia too. Don't care much about the ship, but Orihime always seemed the obvious love interest so it was surprising to see so many people taken aback by the end couples. I do remember when Blech was airing, Orihime getting hate for always going "Kurosaki-kun" which after a while, although yes, kind of seemed too much, but became kind of funny after seeing people's reactions.

I think the gloating in the present is kind of funny because all the hate she got in the past and because of the absolute meltdown the ending cause.

Regarding this part, we see Ulquiorra's strange expression, like he’s upset by something. And to the left there’s the panel of the two tormenting Orihime from afar, like we’re viewing it through someone’s eyes. I find it quite likely he was conflicted about letting them hurt her, but he moves on, because his duty is just to kill Ichigo; he already said before he doesn’t care about Orihime since “Aizen gave no order to kill her”, but Kubo seems to try telling us otherwise. Also, Ulquiorra would never randomly kill Aizen’s soldiers like that; he’s a composed and pragmatic person who is still very loyal to his master.

He does things like praising her uniform, even though he probably did it in anticipation of his “you’re one of us” spiel he immediately gives her afterwards. There’s also the fact that he announces his entry the second time he appears, almost definitely because she was surprised the first time he appeared, showing some minimal care.

There’s the Unmasked interaction, where he falls asleep in her room for God knows what reason, and as Ulquiorra’s dream ends and he was thinking of happiness, we have Orihime’s face in a close-up POV immediately pop up. And his own expression of shock there is also quite telling.

He listens to her cries outside her door after the slap. This an interesting addition by Kubo, since he wouldn’t really bother with such superfluous panels normally.

There’s that relationship chart with his pink line towards Orihime.

His intense poem line of “I lust for everything about you.”

The fact that he still intervenes to attack White despite accepting his death earlier; either he changed his mind just to finish off the Hollow he was powerless against, or he tried to protect Orihime from a close range Cero.

And just everything about the slew of expressions he makes in chapter 353/4 when looking at Orihime.

Adding to this: also notice how as the series progressed Ichigo and Rukia spent less time with each other due to their own character goals being completely different, Ichigo was a journey of self discovery and acceptance of his powers and legacy. Rukia's was about moving on from Kaien's death, opening her heart to others and becoming full fledged member of the Gotei 13, one to make Byakuya proud and acknowledge her, which she did when she defeated As Nodt. Rukia not interacting with Ichigo in the final arc was not random, it was Kubo's way of telling the audience that Rukia's place was with her fellow shinigami, not the human group.
Now tell me, where does Ichigo and Rukia's romance fit into all of this and why did IchiRukis thought it was gonna happen?

A fourth meta explanation is that Kubo was done with Ulquiorra's character and just wanted him gone no matter what. Or that at least the heart as it was explained in Kaien's flashback must mean something else in this case. That's because if Ulquiorra left his heart with Orihime, like Kaien did with Rukia, it never lived on with her; she never brought it him up once after his death. He could've at least had her bring up the poor guy, to at least show she cared, so I don't really know.

It's small things like this that really bother me at times with Kubo's writing. Even some of the best moments in the series seem to have issues when viewed under scrutiny.

I don't hate orihime but she's a wasted character. Kubo half assed her romance with ichigo and gave better moments to him and rukia which is why you had people shipping them instead. The arc where she's more open about her feelings and people used as fuel for her relationship with ichigo going somewhere was literally a copy of what they already did in the soul society arc with rukia at the start.
