Well let's start, the last five or so episode were the worst the show had to offer. They were rushed to end the anime AND to finish closing any plot "holes" that had no need to be filled.
I don't even remember most of the anime by now but I can clearly picture in my head how stupid it was that the protag's mom was alive. WHAT FOR? It changed or added NOTHING
