>Criterion Collection announces they're adding an anime channel to their streaming service in August

Imo this is the first step for a possible re launched of old anime movies in physical media. If they release in some future Patlabor’s trilogy with a fancy deluxe edition i will buy it, I hope their catalog is not filled with mainstream or ghibli

Anime boutique labels have existed for a long time. Criterion isnt the only company releasing physical media and they do a pretty bad job of it compared to their competition from Europe.

That already happens

That already happened.

In all likelihood, the only work that will get a Criterion release is Akira (which had a LD one back in the day) and the Makoto Shinkai films (which are already on their service).

criterion prestige still won’t be enough to pry away all the stuff crunchyroll has rotting in their vault.
