The animation quality is not even that bad, it's just that S1 was unreasonably good. Another sticking point is that its where Murata's writing gets off the rail. I hate the shoehorned tournament arc with the intensity of a thousand suns.

and dropped.

There's a point in Season 2 where in the manga a character is shown having a skull face symbolically, but in the anime he straight up HAS THE POWER TO TURN HIS FACE INTO A SKULL (CGI'd of course).
They were not thinking with S2 they wanted it out the door ASAP

i think s2 is just overhated, it's pretty enjoyable if you ask me. and you might end up liking it even more than s1, but that's just me. though, there is small drop in animation quality of s2

The first season was pretty much a passion project with animators jumping at the chance to flex while adapting a work they liked, with a good choice for director and other team members. Season 2 was more or less a cash grab 5 years later with a different studio and plenty of QUALITY, and while there's still some passionate animators involved here and there, even their work gets downgraded by baffling choices in the use of weird colors&textures, shaky camera, use of 3D, and those. Fucking. Sound effects.

Plotwise, I don't think it was bad. I don't really care for Suiryu or the tournament but I still see this period of time as the one where the manga additions were more of a positive than a negative.

Look no further than the two OPs to see how transparently they stopped giving a shit. There is no artistry whatsoever to the second one. It couldn't be any more generic and phoned in, and JAM Project couldn't salvage it.

I think people overhate the tournament because of the update schedule but it was fairly unimportant and finishes fairly quickly, it's just an excuse to distract Saitama while all the actual monsters were rampaging around.

Like seriously, only the finals is treated as an actual fight, everything else was either a one-shot, a quick gag, or a literal montage.

read the webcomic, the art gets better.
the manga is sort of readable up to about the hero association arc but then just forget it exists

Those Powerpoint presentation names all over the place sure were a choice.

I never watched S2 on initial release but rather later with the blu-ray, and I thought it looked pretty great even watching continuously from S1.

Season 2 is just ok I guess. It doesn't compare to the manga at all.
But if you really loved season 1 then read the webcomic from where the anime left off(chapter 42) The webcomic is peak opm.

Read it if you want

It's a massive step down. There's no animation even close to what we got in s1. Even just the art looks bad in many frames. Genos looks like he's been rubbed in shit, some of it is legit hard to look at. It's an obvious sequel cash grab. Hopefully S3 brings it back a bit.

pretty sure s1 wiped out a budget for s2, thats why they dont even compare
