It depends how well this is done, some shows fall apart when they do this some really navigate the balance well. Hayate No Gotoku was really good with this.

I won't call it "serious" but I always skip this episode when re-watching the show, it is a shame Stocking only ever got 2 focus episodes and this happened to be one of them, Panty had 5 focus episodes and if you include the focus episodes she got in the new "censored Garterbelt's and black character's lips" season Panty had now 7 focus episodes, if I have to say one positive about the new season is that in the latest episode (as SHIT as it was) there's another ghost who goes to the afterlife in a somewhat happy way after finally solving his "unfinished business" instead of exploding so this fat bastard is no longer the exception
