It absolutely did cross the line even in the time period, there's just no way it didn't. They just couldn't tell people much about it, much less write it into books that had to get past government censors, so flowery allegories it is and that became the trope.

What I love the most conceptually about this manga is how intentionally and methodically it takes that trope apart, spelling out the real meaning behind those allegories like girl just got horny, or even how the very concept of walled garden yuri that is a phase in their life where they have to make do without men gets kicked in the face. They do have families, nothing walled about this garden. There are family members, there are men and little male stacy Gaku having a girlfriend wonderfully drives the point home that this isn't an isolated gender segregated boarding home - Kasumi is just LARPing as if it were one because that's how this little purity fag deals with the cognitive dissonance of also being a horny lesbian.

To preface: I think Kamejiro got kind of spiraled by the axe, needing to do a soft-conclusion serialized volume and a soft-reboot fanbox volume. The latest chapters feel like where the story was meant to be in volume 3. The greatest indication of that to me is the sudden introduction of 5 (6 including Sara's dad) key characters, including the Knight Captain who I'm happy to see back. And Fire Princess warping away, which I understand but am less happy about.

Leah occupies Enna's same role but delves deeper into Sarah's past and has more likable attributes. Leah might have even been designed as a Leah clone rather than the other way around. She might be judgmental and austere, but firmly cares about helping others and laments politics getting in the way. She's totally being set up as an ally. And Sara even admits Leah's not entirely wrong. Whether Sara's goofiness is a coping mechanism, it's true she gets herself into trouble she doesn't have time for.

And I think it's cool to have more perspectives once shit gets real. Makes sense if a whole city's under siege. Kamejiro also recently teased Earth Princess again, but I'm not convinced we'll see her anytime soon. Snake and Fire Princess are bound to be back at least.

I don't think AriSaku could ever turn into suffering porn. There's kind of a theme that the world might be cruel but everyone in it is kind. Kasumi has a supportive, loving family and great friends. All her suffering (so far) is internal besides Haruyo's mistake. We'll see how things go with art club senpai next chapter. If it's the end of volume 2 it's likely going to set up future conflict.

I did like that she was observant enough to realize that Sara got fucked over by a smear campaign due to political reasons, but then it seems almost contradictory how she turns around and gets all uppity about that damn 聖女 title (I hate that isekai has beaten this to death so that the word association is instant).
