>>280772742The main issue is that bandits don't really have a happy lifestyle. Being an outlaw means that anyone can do ANYTHING to you, you have no legal recourse. If they catch you, they'll hang you or torture you, and nothing stops your own fellow bandits from knifing you for the gold you have in your pockets.
Camping out in the wild and stealing supplies to live fucking sucks. Most bandits were poor as fuck, and lived transitory lifestyles at best. If they got big, the problems started when you had armies sent after them.
The closest analogue I can think (in recent history) are the semi-legal mercenaries who hunted Indians in the Wild West. Life with a scalphunter band was extremely violent, extremely brief, but could be quite profitable if you survived.
One account details two men having an argument over who got to rape a captured Indian woman, then they immediately got into a knife-fight.
Then the Indians caught up with them and half the band died, the other half only escaped via laying down serious firepower.
