Is this the biggest fall from grace? Haruhi Suzumiya experienced a precipitous decline in popularity, from a position of extreme renown to a state of complete obscurity. What caused this?

The answer: Haruhi was never good.

Gurren Lagann came out barely a year after Haruhi and is still remembered fondly and popular.

Without gimmicks like the non-chronological episode order, Endless 8, the guerilla marketing tactics it is nothing but a mid school club romcom with sci-fi elements with a godawful main heroine that was so bad that they had the basic bitch secondary character's story an entire movie. Another gimmick, since it would have never been a movie if they got rid of the le funny eight episode meme of Endless 8.

It was never good.

Gurren Lagann is an exception and not a standard other shows should be held to. The mecha genre has heavily declined since it released and it's also the one mecha that people who hate mecha tend to like for some reason so it makes sense that people are still paying attention to the old stuff. There's a plethora of shows similar enough to Haruhi that people don't care about sticking to it after almost 20 years with no new content. K-On and Lucky Star were also massive back then and declined.

Endless Eight drove a ton of people away and the movie wasn't enough to bring them all back. Then the main series stopped getting adapted after that and many of the people who still cared refused to watch the spinoff just because it wasn't done by KyoAni. Japanese otaku souring on Aya Hirano probably didn't help either. If anything, it's surprising how popular Haruhi still is in spite of all that.

Most of the key art and animation staff who worked on the show are dead.

Yasuhiro Takemoto - dead.
Shouko Ikeda (who drew pic related) - dead.
Futoshi Nishiya - dead.

All the labels around it are negative - Haruhi is a bad/annoying person, Endless Eight, confusing watch order, generic school romcom. It scares away potential fans.
Most people watch it in chronological order, which is subpar because climax happens in the very beginning, and because it has 2009 episodes, which bring the show down.
Most people haven't seen anime earlier than Haruhi so they fail to see why it was groundbreaking. Meanwhile they've likely seen some similar school slop like Hyouka or Oregairu before actually watching Haruhi, so when they do it's just another formulaic hetero SoL to them with cliches they've seen before.

She is. It may be a tad confusing gauging the popularity of a character from an almost 20 (!) year-old TV show. Especially now, because the new "otaku" are fickle, disloyal and easily influenced by trends, so you won't get passionate, autistic followings like with Jesus Yamato or Haruhi anymore.
Despite all that, there are still some traces of her popularity, like the video for God Knows, or the fact that there are still Haruhi events in Japan from time to time (there's a SOS Brigade pop-up shop going around right now at Gee Stores nationwide).
Compare that to something like Ouran, that aired literally the same season and was fucking huge, not only in Japan but all around the world. When was the last time you heard someone talk about it?

Are we pretending Haruhi isn't absurdly popular for a 20 year old show with no sequels and multiple fakeout announcements? The new LN made a lot of noise.

Gurren lagann also gets regular re-releases, this is the big difference: how the right holders treat them
Haruhi got completely abandoned between 2012 and 2016, and barely any attention until 2020 from Kadokawa/Tanigawa

There was the Yuki AU spinoff series but that wasn't that popular. It didn't have any of the mystery stuff, the artstyle is very different almost unrecognizable, Yuki is a totally different character and she is supposed to be the mc of the spinoff and Haruhi is also a bit different.

This series starts off so strong with the first two or three episodes, it really feels like it's going somewhere and sets up all these strands but it devolves so fast into aimless SoL shit. You even see the animation getting lazier with time too. I suppose it's the essential anime in that regard because what I just said applies to 99% of series too
