It is because having awkward looking girls makes it seem like some post modern shit. While I've not watched it, I'm sure it isn't because Japanese don't have that brain cancer and I've seen a lot of lolicon and other passionate staff who've worked on that project before. This doesn't matter to normalfags though. They believe all anime girls have "exaggerated" proportions so they'll flock to even more exaggerated ones as long as they look unconventional (they don't care about the actual exaggeration and just use it as an excuse). They'll then attribute random post modern shit to what they watch like they do with anything they infect and give their normalfag seal of approval. Works like this should open with a nude scene just to scare off normalfags.

I love everything Yuasa has ever done, including the disappointments and failures.
