I don't really understand how the western side has become so enamored over Kaedagami. I get on a basic level that the designs, tone and genre are much more appealing to people over here, but for me the last 4 chapters were super bland and meandering. The first chapter was the only one that really stood out to me in any way. The art style is nice, but the panelling is uninteresting. The setting and enemy designs are neat, but the action is barely worth talking about. The characters are endearing, but are already being reduced to their base elements too frequently (Chiyou is a doting klutz, and has no valuable input for multiple chapters now otherwise). The whole donkey thing really bored me especially, because you could see the twist coming from a miles away (foreshadowing is good, but signposting it that hard just leaves you feeling impatient as you wait for the protagonists to figure it out), and the climax was non-existent. We ended chapter 3 with Kou looking pissed off and determined, then halfway through chapter 4 he resolves the situation in the most obvious way possible, and the threat is completely forgotten about afterwards. There's no tension, no aftermath, nothing. You forget about the little girl he was supposed to be saving before the chapter is even finished. I might just be a fucking weeb at heart because I'm completely in agreement with the nips that PPP is far and away the best of the batch, but it seems the atmosphere here is that KDG being the sole survivor is a foregone conclusion.

Looking back on this now I think KGB has done a better job of making the story feel like it's moving forward. From chapter 3 you knew what that specific arc would be about (helping Char and retrieving Kuregumo) but that doesn't happen for Kaede until chapter 5. KGB was also expanding it's cast from 3 onwards, adding Char and Hinao in chapter 3 then Sojo and Daruma (the latter, alas, ultimately doomed). Kaedegami didn't start expanding it's cast until chapter 5 when Bai Ze was properly introduced and I'm not sure he's sticking around because this looks like an adventure story where the characters travel the country (spatial distances in KGB don't matter so much because of Shiba). I think this anon >>280831876 is right that the pacing is *similar* but in important ways it's like two chapters behind KGB so I also think it's accurate to say that Kaede has a more languid pace.
