The pages have been upscaled to make them a bit more consistent with Viz's versions at least in size, but the quality, unfortunately, is still not great. I like that anko finally got closure but it still feels weird that everyone is just kind of already moving on so quickly after the double suicide they just witnessed in hokkaido. Like I don't care that kiku and mahiro are gone but it felt a bit anti climatic. Besides don't the japanese shun suicide? At least ko and nazuna are back together.

It's nothing to do with that, they just romanticize it as tragic, poetic even and in truth so do many cultures. The amount of works where its used this way is beyond count.
The real problem here is that there was nothing beautiful about it. Kotoyama tried to wank it as like a bittersweet ending to a tragic love, but it closer resembled a cult indoctrination. Nothing about Kiku's motivations hinted at anything beyond self-interest and Mahiru ultimately decided that a crazy chick using him as a tool is more important than the people who actually care about him. Utter dogshit all around.

Yeah my thoughts exactly, you think with all this build up to the conclusion kotoyama would at least try to stick the landing but instead goes for typical subversion like every other nip writer and completely botches it. Not really leaving me with a lot of faith in these next few volumes.

He had two friends but let's be real, until recently they had fallen out of touch, and it's not like he could just bum around with them forever considering they each have their own lives to live, especially seeing as Kou himself wants to abandon the waking world to become a vampire
Meanwhile he's completely estranged from his family, none of his other school friendships mean anything, and the only other person to show any interest in him as a person and not just as an honor student or as a replacement for his brother is Kiku
You can argue that he didn't have to throw in with her the way he did but he really didn't have a happy life to return to and that's part of the tragedy here

Mahiru would not stay a student forever, he had a whole life ahead of him. I cannot buy into the idea of his suicide being some kind of unavoidable tragedy. Lots of people have dark periods in their lives. Even within the series itself, several characters have overcome their past traumas with the help of others. It's just such a shitty thing for this series to romanticize when in reality he got blue whaled by another party.

Bit of an odd volume. Again, I just feel like the tone was kinda off. Everyone got their closure, but I guess I didn't really care. It was nice seeing Anko and Mahiru happy, but I feel like we've already had that. Either way, it was a decent way of wrapping up the arc. I'm glad to put it behind us
