This series is way more generic than Black Clover or Fairy Tail. The forces romance is so fucking atrocious and the cliche misunderstandings are painful to watch.

It's less generic than your mentioned shows, along with the majority of shounen as a whole, but it's still a shounen filled with tropes. The difference is it's actually entertaining. Dandadan is pretty much the only shounen I can stomach which tells me that it's better than all the others.

the romance between the two main characters was actually quite well done before it got put on hold
continuously adding new characters has really fucked things up, and it's focusing on fight after fight way too much for the entire second half

I agree, one thing is that at least Black Clover and Fairy Tail embrace being anime. Dandadan is so westoid-influenced it's honestly disgusting. For example the fights are fucking SHIT since nobody calls their attacks. No special moves or techniques, who gives a fuck about muh sakuga animation when the fights have zero hype or direction.
