Honestly the early volumes aren't where things get bad, I reread it recently and the early volumes were...not particularly kind to the older characters, but decent.

I forget what arc it was when I really noticed the shift. Maybe it was somewhere around the Stone Bone Cold fight, maybe it was the Olympics, maybe it was Jijiman, I know there's a point where I just didn't feel as good reading it in the same way.
