Most of the love for it was when it was a pure /a/core cringe comedy about a femanon utterly fucking up basic human interaction
That is now currently only a tiny sliver fraction of the entire IP. Within a couple dozen chapters, the socially awkward hateful misanthropic sperg aspect died out, and all that was left was the painful cringe comedy, but that only works if Tomoko is still a total butt monkey, and even that wound up getting phased out even if it took many years and the cringe comedy by itself isn't why anyone cared about it but WHAT the cringe was about
Without any of that, all you have is a cute teenage anime girl hanging out with a bunch of friends. Tomoko might as well become Konata at this point.
And the sad fact is, it's only the first slice of the story anyone knows or cares about because that's the only part that ever had an anime adaptation. Even the creator herself admitted that it was fail-daughter loser Tomoko that even gave the manga life or a fanbase. For all intents and purposes, the anime is the only "true" Watamote and the manga after the end of it is Tomoko's increasingly normie lesbian dream after she slipped on a banana peel and entered a permanent irreversible coma
