The ending of things like Happy Sugar Life, Brokeback Mountain and The Rose of Versailles left the audience feeling something, some couple just “getting together” and “being happy” like in Sartain is the most boring shit ever.

Satou died and that moved people and it moved people even more knowing that Sio 10 years later was still talking to an imaginary version of Satou, unable to let the latter go.

Their just happily being together would've left no impact, furthermore, it's entirely unclear how that could be given that Satou's a murderer.

Happy Sugar Life is a strange case of an author who normally writes the most mundane and mediocre tripe imaginable actually having a good idea and executing on it with a fair amount of success. It is an anomaly amongst her catalogue. It could have been better, for sure, but when taking the rest of her work into account, she was punching well above her weight class with this one.

White and Black was pretty avant-garde and weird and Sartain was also fairly edge for what it was doing, the ending was just fangless and it was probably just cancelled to be honest.
