Rin-ne Story Time
Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the twenty-first volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is ๅขƒ็•ŒใฎRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Previous thread: >>280730469

I will be using scans of the official VIZ localization. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.280854568 >>280854622 >>280855409 >>280862031 >>280864562
Original title was ใƒˆใƒณใƒใƒซใซไฝ•ใ‹ใ„ใ‚‹ which Google translated as "What's in the tunnel?".

Furinkan mentions that: "The "Sunday Summer Thanksgiving Fesitval" begins in this issue. The contest continues for four issues in total in which readers must collect four entry tickets in order to enter to win one of 27 original colored shikishi from the current series running in Shonen Sunday." I'll post the scan they have. A shikishi (่‰ฒ็ด™) is just a square paper board often used in Japan for autographs.

July 17th, 2013. Author's note:
"Q: What makes you say "this is my favorite"?
A: Cooler and a nighter."

Furinkan notes that: "A "nighter" is a night baseball game."

Also, I'll probably go to bed before you finish dumping, so here's a link to the English translation of My Sky. I'm guessing you're going to dump it on Saturday, so let me know if you spot any mistakes and I'll fix them before then.

I'm a little bothered by translating "octopus nigiri" as octopus on rice. And Rinne's image clearly depicts takoyaki and yes, that's what he said in the bubble as well.

Pickled (or vinegar) octopus is called ้…ขใƒ€ใ‚ณ in Japanese. I've never had it. I have a mixed relationship with octopus culinarily so I don't know how much I would enjoy it.

Just curious anons.
Every one in a while I cross with these threads and can't but think
>God Rumiko art kinda looks like crap
But then I remember she is already an old lady, yet still a very active one at making manga, so I don't mind it and I know most anons here probably feel the same.
Still... How is the writing in this manga? Does it compensate for the meh art?
RumicWorldStoryTime !!dgzHFP7tdu4 No.280855534 >>280855565 >>280856043 >>280891718
Yup, this chapter starts like this. We do have a cover, but it is on the next page. This chapter's first three pages were originally in color actually.

Rumiko often has full bodies extend into other panels, but it is a little funny here. And yes, the bottle seemed to say "sun scleene" in English in the original manga as well.

July 24th, 2013. Author's note:
"Q: Please let us know what manga genre you would like to try?
A: Picaresque romance."

I had to google picaresque. I don't think Mao qualifies, so I hope she gets to do it in some form. Maybe as a one-shot.

Skipped the art spacer. The term used here by Rinne was ๆญป็ฅž้’ๅนด้ƒจ or "Shinigami Youth Group" or "Shinigami Youth Club".

>>280855524
So, I am undeniably very biased but I will be the first to admit that Rumiko's art has gotten a lot more simplified and basic than her works from the 80s. I don't think it is just plain bad, I think it captures the manga-like style she was inspired by well but I'll admit, it can feel very utilitarian. As for the writing though, I feel I have to approach it on a case by case basis. There are definitely some chapters and one-shots that feel a bit underdeveloped or whose central schtick doesn't hit with me. I do however find Rin-ne very charming as a series and most of the gags entertain me, even if a lot of them are running gags like in Urusei Yatsura. Mao is a more serious story, so I am a bit more critical of some of the episodic chapters, but I do feel that the dramatic elements of it work for me the same way the dramatic elements of Mermaid Saga did. And I really do feel that it is less slapdash in terms of plotting than Inuyasha was.

This creature is called Tsunodaishi (่ง’ๅคงๅธซ) and according to legend he is actually the 10th century monk Ryogen (่‰ฏๆบ) the head abbott of the temple Enryakuji. It was said that Ryogen was able to turn into this creature, alternatively described as an oni or a yaksha in order to banish evil-doers. His demonic alias, Tsunodaishi, means "Great Horned Master" and appears on ofuda paper talismen. The Tendai sect still distribute ofuda featuring Tsunodaishi."

The title is translated pretty literally, but I'll post the Japanese title because it is apparently a reference. It was ใƒŠใ‚นใƒญใƒžใƒณ.

Also, this cover might seem a little odd, but here's some context from Furinkan: "During Obon families set up impaled cucumbers and eggplants with toothpicks to symbolize horses and cows. The cucumber, the symbol of the spirit horse (็ฒพ้œŠ้ฆฌ, shoryo-uma), is supposed to bring the soul of the deceased quickly into this world to his family. The spirit cow (็ฒพ้œŠ็‰›, shoryo-ushi), symbolized by the eggplant, slowly takes the soul back into the afterlife." And yes, this chapter came out in August which is the month Obon takes place.

Furinkan also notes that: "Takahashi's third editor on Kyokai no RINNE, Masato Itaya, listed this chapter as his favorite chapter. In the linked interview he explains that the origin of the title is a reference to the bath salts in which the gravure idol "Fumin" appeared in commercials for in the '90's." I'll post the interview segment after the dump.

ๅนปๅคœ็‡ˆๆ€ใ„ๅ‡บใ‚ฟใ‚คใƒ— is the name of the tool. I think they localized it in a similar way last time. You can also seemingly translate ๅนป as "phantom", but I don't know. Also, the term translated as "record keeper" was ่จ˜้Œฒไฟ‚. I was just curious since it sounded a bit stilted to me and it makes sense if it is just a term.

It also points out that "Annette is being referred to as "ane" (ๅง‰). "Ane" means "older woman/lady". It is funny in this case because "ane" can also be short for "Annette"."

By the way, VIZ did not embellish the student's reactions. The kid said "ใ™ใฃใ’ใƒผๅทจไนณใ€‚" or "Awesome, huge breasts". The one calling her hot did refer to her as a ็พŽไบบ or "beautiful person" and often refers to hot women.

I do find it funny that the only characters in Rumic manga that I ever really see play video games are either actual children or more often, manchildren. Womanchildren more since we have Annette and Hinako Ninomiya. I guess Rumiko's a bit old-fashioned like that.

Feel free to use the thread to discuss anything Rin-ne related. I have some stuff I'll posting here and there to bump the thread.

I will be returning next Saturday to dump Volume 22 of Rin-ne. In addition, thanks to the wonderful generosity of one of our readers, we have received a translated and typeset version of My Sky from the Rumic Theater series. Now, technically by publication date I was supposed to have already dumped it, so I will do that story this Saturday and Revenge Doll will have to wait until Wednesday. Thanks again for your work, translating is way harder than anything I've done for these storytimes, so I really appreciate this coming about as a result of these.

Here's that bit from that article.

"I am afraid I have brought a page with quite a few spoilers. I'm sorry if there are people who haven't read it yet (I don't think there are any by now...). This is a page from Kyokai no RINNE volume 21, chapter 4. The man on the left is called "Nasuo" in the story. As you can probably guess, he is a character who appears only in this chapter. His appearance is naturally a key point in the story.

In the meeting stage of our planning, we talked about how we could keep this appearance hidden from the reader until the end of the story. It was almost the middle of summer, Obon was approaching, and I had hung my straw hat on a hanger at her house. Sensei saw the hat and came up with the idea of having "Eggplant Man" wear the hat, which led me to the idea of hiding his distinctive contours.

I've heard that director Hayao Miyazaki "creates works in a world within a radius of 3 meters", and I've come to realize that this is something he has in common with Takahashi-sensei. Perhaps all geniuses are like this...

This may be a bit of a meander, but the title of this chapter is "Eggplant Romance". The title is a reference to the bath salts in which the gravure idol "Fumin" (ask your father if you don't know the name) appeared in commercials for in the '90's. [20] The power of the title is amazing, and it left a very strong impression on me.

Kyokai no RINNE 3rd editor - Masato Itaya (ๆฟ่ฐท็œŸไบบ)
Takahashi: I liked "Eggplant Romance" quite a bit too. Not just on this chapter, but Itaya-san is very good at expanding the storylines which really helped me."

One thing I think is interesting about Mao compared to Rumiko's other series is that there's a relatively consistent sense of progression of time. The seasons change, the aftereffects of the earthquake linger for a decent while, Nanoka becomes a high schooler partway through... I mean, leaving the episodic comedies aside, I don't remember it ever even being winter in Inuyasha.
Anonymous No.280889016

time does pass, but inuyasha does the classic shonen thing of a lot happening in a short period of time
kagome's adventure starts on her 15th birthday, her 16th birthday is never brought up
her birthday happens before summer vacation, and we only see her summer uniform with the short sleeves afterwards and never again
>I don't remember it ever even being winter in Inuyasha.
it happened actually, although it didn't snow
high school entrance exams are in january/february, and we do see kagome and her friends wearing scarves and coats when they were on their way to the venue
>there's a relatively consistent sense of progression of time.
yeah mao does have more time moving forward, we even get specific years when nanoka first sees a taisho era newspaper, and then the earthquake, there's even a wednesday's diary where rumiko mentions a specific year and why she couldn't draw mao in short sleeves lol she's keeping track this time

also she didn't say quadrillionaire, she just says they're at the top of the rich people's list, which is a shame because i wanted to see what [ridiculous number]-illionaire looked like in japanese

apparently japanese uses a german loanword for "cast"
>ใ‚ฎใƒ—ใ‚น

>the springtime of my life... is darker than winter!
the japanese line is similar
>ใ‚ใŸใ—ใฎ้’ๆ˜ฅใฏ... ใพใฃๆš—้—‡ใ ใƒผใฃโ€ผ
"the springtime of my life... is completely dark-!!"
but misses the reference to winter, which was a nice touch in the translation

>่„ณๅ†…ใŠ่Šฑ็•‘ (nลnai o-hanabatake) essentially meaning a garden in the brain.
interesting, that explains some things that i've seen in other anime

>"$ $ $ $MAK" pretty good.
oh my god there's yen signs
>picrel
there's a ใƒใƒฅ (japanese kissing sound effect) closest to maris, but the yen signs after are just that
though i guess if you squint it kind of looks like ใƒ?

>no one could be poorer than me!
i've concluded that maris is rinne's descendant from a long-distant future
red-hair and broke as fuck

>talk about fragile!
tragically there was no reference to moroi in the original
maris just calls it a really cheap structure
>ใƒ›ใƒณใƒžใฎๅฎ‰ๆ™ฎ่ซ‹โ€ผ

>this guy worked for Viz as essentially specifically a localizer or rewriter until about Kyokai no Rinne.
>Now they just have translators.
uh... you sure about that?

funny that the title of the latest mao chapter had the word "debt" in it heh

suzy is called suu-chan ใ‚นใƒผใกใ‚ƒใ‚“ but considering that only one person refers to her by name/nickname at all, we don't know if her name is really just suu or if it was short for something

and that's all i've got

Ah, that explains it. Maris is great.

Oh, it certainly didn't seem like they had a dedicated localizer nowadays. I wonder if they just needed one for Mao as like, a consultant.
