Alright, it is Wednesday and I am gonna post the twenty-first volume of Rin-ne. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Rin-ne after the dump.

Rin-ne is Rumiko Takahashi's return to comedy after Inuyasha. Rin-ne is VIZ's localized title, presumably chosen to assist in pronunciation. The original title is 境界のRINNE (Kyokai/Kyoukai no Rinne) which means Rinne of the Boundary. While it is not a megahit like some of her other huge series, I highly recommend it to fans of Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura though it is obviously different.

Original title was トンネルに何かいる which Google translated as "What's in the tunnel?".

Furinkan mentions that: "The "Sunday Summer Thanksgiving Fesitval" begins in this issue. The contest continues for four issues in total in which readers must collect four entry tickets in order to enter to win one of 27 original colored shikishi from the current series running in Shonen Sunday." I'll post the scan they have. A shikishi (色紙) is just a square paper board often used in Japan for autographs.

I'm a little bothered by translating "octopus nigiri" as octopus on rice. And Rinne's image clearly depicts takoyaki and yes, that's what he said in the bubble as well.

Pickled (or vinegar) octopus is called 酢ダコ in Japanese. I've never had it. I have a mixed relationship with octopus culinarily so I don't know how much I would enjoy it.

Yup, this chapter starts like this. We do have a cover, but it is on the next page. This chapter's first three pages were originally in color actually.

Rumiko often has full bodies extend into other panels, but it is a little funny here. And yes, the bottle seemed to say "sun scleene" in English in the original manga as well.

So, I am undeniably very biased but I will be the first to admit that Rumiko's art has gotten a lot more simplified and basic than her works from the 80s. I don't think it is just plain bad, I think it captures the manga-like style she was inspired by well but I'll admit, it can feel very utilitarian. As for the writing though, I feel I have to approach it on a case by case basis. There are definitely some chapters and one-shots that feel a bit underdeveloped or whose central schtick doesn't hit with me. I do however find Rin-ne very charming as a series and most of the gags entertain me, even if a lot of them are running gags like in Urusei Yatsura. Mao is a more serious story, so I am a bit more critical of some of the episodic chapters, but I do feel that the dramatic elements of it work for me the same way the dramatic elements of Mermaid Saga did. And I really do feel that it is less slapdash in terms of plotting than Inuyasha was.

I think it is a bit of a stretch. It definitely resembles the sort of paranormal spots people imagine are ghosts in houses and buildings.

霊視ゴーグル (reishi gougoru) so, this is pretty direct translation. Apparently, you can translate reishi as clairvoyance too, but spirit vision is obviously accurate here. And yeah, gougoru is a loanword from the English word goggles.

霊道カメラ (rei-dou kamera). Translated literally here. And yes, kamera is a loanword from English.

The title is translated pretty literally, but I'll post the Japanese title because it is apparently a reference. It was ナスロマン.

Also, this cover might seem a little odd, but here's some context from Furinkan: "During Obon families set up impaled cucumbers and eggplants with toothpicks to symbolize horses and cows. The cucumber, the symbol of the spirit horse (精霊馬, shoryo-uma), is supposed to bring the soul of the deceased quickly into this world to his family. The spirit cow (精霊牛, shoryo-ushi), symbolized by the eggplant, slowly takes the soul back into the afterlife." And yes, this chapter came out in August which is the month Obon takes place.

Furinkan also notes that: "Takahashi's third editor on Kyokai no RINNE, Masato Itaya, listed this chapter as his favorite chapter. In the linked interview he explains that the origin of the title is a reference to the bath salts in which the gravure idol "Fumin" appeared in commercials for in the '90's." 幻夜燈思い出タイプ is the name of the tool. I think they localized it in a similar way last time. You can also seemingly translate 幻 as "phantom", but I don't know. The original manga had 彼女 at the bubble pointing to the younger woman but with the furigana メギツネ which does in fact mean, vixen or female fox. It refers to a cunning and manipulative woman in slang though. A little different from our slang from the same term, but close enough for VIZ and I guess me as well.

I've spent enough time trying to find the exact magical circle Rumiko referenced in Rin-ne. I think I am going to skip this one. It presumably is fairly close to its source, given that it has text on it. And yes, the text used English letters in the original Japanese as well.

Furinkan has these notes in regards to her name: "姉祭・アネット・瞳Annette's last name "Anematsuri" (姉祭) is written with the kanji for "older sister" and "festival". Hitomi (瞳) means "pupil" (of an eye)."

It also points out that "Annette is being referred to as "ane" (姉). "Ane" means "older woman/lady". It is funny in this case because "ane" can also be short for "Annette"."

By the way, VIZ did not embellish the student's reactions. The kid said "すっげー巨乳。" or "Awesome, huge breasts". The one calling her hot did refer to her as a 美人 or "beautiful person" and often refers to hot women.

Maybe it is because depictions of video games are rare in Rumic manga, but this panel stuck with me. The sweat pants and what appears to be either a JRPG with school elements or just a random visual novel.

I do find it funny that the only characters in Rumic manga that I ever really see play video games are either actual children or more often, manchildren. Womanchildren more since we have Annette and Hinako Ninomiya. I guess Rumiko's a bit old-fashioned like that.

Original title is 初めての試練. This is a fine translation, though Furinkan went with ordeal and Google went with trial for 試練. It is probably not going to be a paper exam.

初方マナミ is the name in Japanese. Furinkan states that it has the kanji for "naive" in it. Though it doesn't say which one is it. 初方 seems to mean beginner though and the furigana うぶかた for it seems to mean "newborn".

I've heard that director Hayao Miyazaki "creates works in a world within a radius of 3 meters", and I've come to realize that this is something he has in common with Takahashi-sensei. Perhaps all geniuses are like this...

This may be a bit of a meander, but the title of this chapter is "Eggplant Romance". The title is a reference to the bath salts in which the gravure idol "Fumin" (ask your father if you don't know the name) appeared in commercials for in the '90's. [20] The power of the title is amazing, and it left a very strong impression on me.
