uh, no?
I'm not even a westaboo, but comics had stuff like The Watchmen, Hellboy, Invinsible, TMNT, and so on.

Also, while comics have no "starting point", you can browse by writer and make your way there. I very much enjoyed Jason Aaron's Punisher

They did before the comic code turned them in exactly what your pic describes.
Cliffhanger was the closest thing to successfully beat the comic code mentality (including turning every capeshit in almost the same), but it died super fast because they where a bunch of divas.

Not defending OP since he is cherry picking. But all the comics you listed are still cape-shit.
Anonymous No.280864721 [Report] >>280864741 >>280865195
American comic books used to have a few genres before the...1950s or so, when everything was turned in to capeshit under the Comic Code Authority's censorship. Then all those pulps about cowboys or detectives or science-fiction and fantastical adventures turned in to men in spandex punching bank robbers.

Living Hell

Yes, most comic books are capeshit but that has less to do with being monotonous and more to do with culture. Comics and cartoons are seen as for children and children IPs are often few monopolies, even in Japan (ie Doreamon, Precure, Sazae-san)

There are plenty of comics that arent capeshit, you're just thinking of the two industry giants Marvel and DC
But outside them there's a lot of diverse content too, hell even those two companies have a decent amount of oneshot or shortstories that arent really capeshit
If anything, I'd say mass media hasnt even began to really explore comics in the same way as manga, probably because the Marvel/DC presence that makes anything outside those be seen as indie, but they exist and some are pretty good

Now tell us how many cape comics are for children since Watchmen.
Kids don't give a fuck about capes because they're nor funny, nor spectacular, nor edgy in ways they care.
You need a field study to find something from Marvel and DC that swims against their current, and the other editorials barely exist, making it the same to find something there.

Yeah I remember hearing about some code they enacted that censored and made comics boring. It was ""voluntary"" so that it wouldn't infringe on free speech, but major publishers followed it. Honestly it's no surprised Japan filled this niche.

moving away from anthology works was a mistake that leads to stagnation.

everyone wants to read popular WSJ hero's manga but once they read the latest chapter they still have a book full of other not quite as popular stories they may as well read because they've paid for it, leading to them also following other stories which could either grow to become the new popular WSJ thing, remain a side attraction or get axed.

vs
>I like batman
>buy batman comic
>I'm over batman
>stop buying batman comic

of course if they're patient and wait for the tankobun instead then it doesn't really matter but the level of competition and sink or swim evolution really sets japanese manga apart from comics.

Something similar is happening in China. Xianxia was legitimately interesting to read, lots of smut and violence, until the CCP locked it down around 2020. It's almost sad when I look at it nowadays.

I don't think he meant anything. I think he's some born-insecure weeb 10th grade. But anyone here should be able to tell you that accessibility today doesn't refer to the ability to get a hold of manga like in the old days. Today it just means an easier route for normalfaggots to further pollute what used to be a niche interest.

The entire western graphic novel market seems to be easily beaten by manga, but even excluding manga it seems capeshit makes up a rather small percentage of comic sales.

why hasn't there been a resurgence of american comics made by americans who read japan comics and thought "wow I want to draw mango but I don't know moonspeak so I guess I will make it in english?" you would think that the editors of american comic magazines would be flooded with submissions like that, or at least there would be tons of american webtoons, but it seems like all we get are shitty blog style comics where people draw their garbage takes on politics and current events.

Definitions are being dumbed down at an aggressive rate. Being a weeb used to mean that you believed Japan was a paradise, and you held an intense bitterness for our country and its entertainment. If you like anime, then you're someone who likes anime. If you want to move to Japan because you think they're 100 years ahead of everyone, have an immaculate culture, and produce the finest stories ever written, then you're a weeb. That's the way I have always used the term.
But now it's just, "You watched Demon Slayer once! Gawd you're such a weeb!"
Just like these fucking zoomers who stream themselves playing the latest FOTM gacha and are all, "Oh my god! Are these waifus!!!!?!"

The comicbook industry shot itself in the foot by self-limiting it consumers base. Manga marketing themselves to everyone while comic marketing themselves to only the comic nerds, which mean less new people would want to try new comic. Rebooting and multiverse bullshit also didn't help with attracting new readers.

Comic books had it going on for a while
>Animal Man
>Hellblazer
>Lucifer
>Sandman
>The Boys
>Preacher
All the best capeshit is always self-contained stories, especially with DC's Vertigo. It has some crossovers and expanded universe bullshitry time to time but it was handled correctly. Zatanna broke up with Constantine and he grew into a miserable old man. Lucifer met Yahweh and leaves the DC universe forever.
They need to ass pull reasons for Gotham to stay a shithole forever because otherwise Batman would eventually definitively win or lose. The retcon and the bringing back of Barry Allen is the worst thing that has happened to DC comics because of the ripple effect it has had on the other books. Much like the Death of Superman, death is no longer significant and the stakes are no longer there. Taking that away erased years of character development and weight that was a foundation for many other stories.
The only good thing Grant Morrison ever wrote was Animal Man and the last entertaining superhero comic was Injustice
