Muzan's blood is so potent can made the Lower Moons completely irrelevant by strengthen his entire army of random demons to become strong as they the Lower Moons were instantly, Himejima and Muichiro both comment the fodder they are killing are all as strong as the LMs they killed in the past.

Kaigaku is a shitter by Upper Moon standards but if Muzan brothered to give him the Upper 6 spot he had enough of Muzan's blood to stay in that rank, and not remain a fodder demon as strong as any Lower Moon was.

it was also mentioned directly after the fight that Zenitsu got extremely lucky because he caught Kaigaku essentially right after his transformation into a demon. If Kaigaku had had more time to feed on humans and experiment more with his power, he would have bodied Zenitsu effortlessly. I feel like that needs to be taken into account when discussing "Kaigaku was just a lower ass demon who was only an Upper Moon because Muzan had no one else"

Not true, honestly. He was just new. Douma also stated that Akaza had "gotten a little stronger since we last met" implying that Akaza had time to feed on more humans and get stronger since the last time he saw Douma. Demons aren't stagnant. They grow stronger over time. Kaigaku would have too. Not crazy to think that given he is a Breath User and former demon slayer he could have eventually overtaken Akaza and become the new #3 or even #2.

Yes, but not because of the useless LMs. His biggest fuckup was Nakime. Most demons only create combat abilities and struggle to fight demon slayers, individually none of them matter at all to Muzan and do nothing that he couldn't do if he wasn't so lazy and afraid of sword jesus. The only fucking demon in a thousand years to make a useful ability for Muzan was Nakime, and when he finally rewards her for it she creates ANOTHER useful ability to find exactly what Muzan wants. She is literally more useful than UM 1-3, even if the entire UM group were still alive she would be more important than all 6 of them combined.
Muzan leaves her alone and vulnerable. She's #4 on paper but her not good for combat. She gets captured and turned against him, then he has to kill her because he was so fucking stupid. If Muzan actually obtained immortaility, Nakime is the one demon he would guaranteed let live.

As others have mentioned, you really can’t think about Kaigaku as anything more than an emergency sub-in some for Zenitsu to fight when the author remembered that he’s a main character so needed a UM fight. The number of UMs were much fewer than the number of protagonists who needed to fight so the author ripped something out of his ass last minute, that’s all. Why did Kaigaku be strong? Because that would have resulting in a long battle and the author clearly didn’t want to spend that much time on Zenitsu. Some shounen artists are just really bad at managing the balance of their combat rosters resulting in these bizarre / boring match-ups and team-jobbings.
