>Frieren is anime equivalent of Tolkien
This is silly statement. Tolkien created the basis for modern fantasy. Dungeons and Dragons, Witcher, Song of Ice and Fire, Warcraft, etc., are based on Tolkien's works. He introduced elves, dwarves, and other archetypes. Tolkien created a vast world based on Celtic, Nordic myths and legends, and Christianity. He created several languages used in Middle-Earth.
Comparing Frieren to Tolkien is silly. Frieren is a generic-looking (as well could be AI generated) anime full of fanservice.

Tolkien did not create the basis for modern fantasy.
Modern fantasy is far closer to the work of Robert E. Howard than it is anything that Tolkien did, other than having more magical races than REH's works.

First of you are the same faggot who is repeating the other Frieren haze threads the last few days.

Secondly Frieren is the closest to a Tolkien like story you will find today.
Unlike most fantasy slop being people doing a generic DnD run and writing that down selling it as the next fantasy hit it is much closer to Tolkien.

My exact thoughts when watching that episode with the ghost mimic. Frieren's such a slog to get through and this was resolved in such a dull way halfway through the episode.

Frieren is an isekai (native isekai is to be precise) and has nothing to do with Tolkien or D&D except only insofar as JRPGs (mainly DragonQuest but not limited to that) are influenced by them.

Frieren has a lot of strong points, I like the music and artstyle, the animation is good, the basic premise of the story provides is very strong and potentially timelessโ€ฆ but in a lot of ways, it falls short and fails to deliver on its potential.
The magic system is initially implied to be mystical, esoteric, but quickly becomes the usual gamified DND-esque magic laser beam light show. But I still appreciate that they still use and show a lot more unconventional โ€žtoolkitโ€œ DND magic rather than just โ€žblue beam goes pew pewโ€œ.
Same thing with the RPG classifications of mage/cleric/warrior/hero existing in-universe, instead of understanding that these are archetypal abstractions to build proper characters from.
It always feels like Frieren really wants to to escape using the same tried and tired J/W-RPG tropes like most other anime do, and instead tell an actual story that happens to play in a more fantastical world; but they always fall back on what they know.
The contrast between the first few episodes, and the school/magic exam arc perfectly encapsulated this perfectly. Simple, but unpredictable adventuring driven by character motivations/struggle, overcoming organic obstacles, as opposed to boring, predictable vidya type game logic in order to unlock the next checkpoint/level.

honestly i fear it. it's easy for stuff to fall below your expectations. W3 was great enough to immerse in.
now IF it looked like madhouse's mahouka s1 or overlord s1, or alderamin, i could live with it.
and they shouldn't add too much japanese humor. sapkowski was heavy on cynicism and shades of grey sides to conflicts. everyone in northern kingdoms was a typical sly slavic statesman, you had caricatures of medieval germans, frenchies.
on the other hand they could just hire a politics-heavy isekai writer, those guys could write something passable.

Why can't people just have fun with the anime without going pseudointellectual and comparing it to Tolkien?

This is just a morning cartoon for children in Japan. You're supposed to turn on the TV, watch it and go about your life. It's not meant to induce a grand reflection on the meaning of life. I repeat: IT'S JUST A CARTOON FOR CHILDREN.

So tell what do you think comes close to Tolkien.
Feels like all you know about Tolkien is the movie and series slop.

Tolkien is not all about action, it is about the characters and the journey much more, as well as the beauty of their world.

Elves as theyre viewed today? 100% Tolkein. Pre-Tolkien they were viewed mas mischievous forest sprites, not particularly beautiful or kind, and certainly would not have been a mainstay of fantasy works.

Elves and fairies were closely associated for a long time. If not thought of as basically the same thing. And the beautiful Fae Queen was a popular trope in neomedieval Romantic literature.
That is the background that Tolkien was pulling from. His shift was making them warriors and possibly making some links to biblical concepts like the Nephelim.
The names were taken from the Eddas, but the basis for the Elves was the already standard English myths about beautiful forest spirits that would whisk you away with them. With the subversion being that these elves were civilization builders that retreated to the spirit world later.

Nobody thinks this
The only things similar are that the premise would totally work as a sequel to LOTR and the way in which they deal with mortality and passage of time are somewhat similar. But that's basically it.

It's a bit similar to the LOTR movies, in that they are accessible and balances fantasy/action/adventure/comedy/drama/romance with an ensemble cast of characters, so has fairly wide appeal

The world building is basically "have you played D&D?" It's really wasn't an issue because that wasn't what the initial premise of the story is about. But the more focus they put on the world, the more obvious it is that little thought was put into it. If you're not familiar with any of that, then the world is very lifeless, with not much explained. Elves and dwarves have long life spans just because. Labyrinths and Dungeons exist in the world for no other reason than to be explored by adventurers. etc. Other stories that lift their world building from D&D have this problem too, but at least try to put their own twist on it. I guess it's just a bit distracting to me that Frieren doesn't even try.
