Just caught up with this. What this manga wants to do, it does well. Tayamada is cute, Sasaki isn't too annoying, the mood is set up just right.
But the potential is just limited for this kind of story. Obligatory dozens of chapters of ""slow but steady"" progress, obligatory secondary couple that will get more focus once the main couple gets together or is close to that, obligatory resolving each other's issues, obligatory "big moment" once every ten chapters.
Honestly, safe series like this being the most popular subgenre of manga romance is what discourages other authors from writing more emotional and dramatic stuff. I mean, why bother trying to come up with some complex story when you can just write episodic stuff where character just meet and talk, flirt, blush and joke around for hundreds of chapters, and it will sell like hot cakes?
I commend the author for writing more grounded characters, but essentially this is no different from all the teasing manga we've been getting so much in recent years. And I'm tired of that.

That's what I kept in mind when I was typing that, because I think they are fundamentally the same. Also safe, also episodic, also big moment once every ten or so chapters, also with a focus shifting to secondary couple(s). I think Supermarket is slightly preferable to me, because Sasaki is not as insufferable as Seto and doesn't start screaming every time the girl approaches him, but they are still similar.
Don't get me wrong, both are decent, it's just that I want something more ambitious than this.

I know. I'm not talking about dating or not, it's more about how everything in Anjou feels pre-determined. No matter how faggy Seto was for hundred chapter, there was no way Anjou would ever be disillusioned, there was no way something could go wrong for them. Similarly with Toyo and Inuyama, there's no way anything can go wrong for them. It's all completely safe, it's all already decided by the author, and all you need to do is to just enjoy the journey to the inevitable happy end.

Yeah, but in Anjou even if you know the end it's important how they'll get to it. Seto is obviously gonna get over his issues with touching her, but how and when it'll happen is important. Same goes for Anjou's dream. It's what makes the story still compelling after the confession unlike other series. Same goes for Super Ura.

I often wonder why writers usually stay in the safe "teasing romance" plot segments and don't venture themselves more into the post-confession part: love declared, relationship setting and possible issues, living together, helping secondary romantic subplots, dealing with an outside context problem as a couple. You have a lot of situations to exploit as a writer, and if even a casual scrub lurker reader like me who hasn't write shit in his life can notice that, how can they not?
Is it really that hard, are the editors pressuring to mantain the tease to improve sales and hint at an anime adaptation, etc?
i don't want to mention Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa as an example again, but i can't remember many other romcoms that actually adressed these points as well

I'd like to read some slice of life romance, preferably out of high school, that doesn't feel like a guide to Gardening/Cooking/Cosplay/Camping.
