I don't think Oda ever spelled it out but it seems obvious that he was partially inspired by Hulk Hogan like so many One Piece characters are inspired by big stars

The entire leadup to Whitebeards death is filled with a variety of raw emotions, you didn't get that with Ace. His boy may have died, but it is Whitebeard who has to live with the fact that he survived him, and the way he channels that suffering while still refusing to kill any of these "brats" makes his last stand much more impactful. Whitebeards death hits the hardest because you can feel that he is filled with love.

I loved it but especially because of Luffy's reaction that apparently filtered a lot of people. Ace wanting to pick fights after watching the whole time made sense and how we went from "oh he's saved" to "oh he's dead" made it even more effective.

I think this was actually good, the one advantage the anime has over the manga is the ability to really let you sit in a powerful moment like that, they often do it just to pad out the episode but sometimes its actually done well to make the moment hit hard.

It dragged on way too much, shrill voices saying the same name just gets boring and annoying (worst combination ever) after a while. In the manga it's clearly a quick flash of memories and it's up to you how long you want to reflect on it.
