The whole scene was Kurumi having an emotional meltdown at the thought of Naoi having a girlfriend/fuck buddy she didn't know about. If she couldn't fuck Naoi, she'd settle for Kokoro's invite of closing her eyes and pretending to be with Naoi as Kokoro fucked her. The whole scene was awkward and depressing, on top of being oddly placed between the volumes where Kurumi learns to stand up to other people and when she comes to Naoi's rescue in the festival arc. Earlier in the series, the scene would've likely made way more sense, like in volume 2. Instead, Naoi will warm up to a "loyal" Kurumi a volume after Kurumi almost let Kokoro have her virginity. I think all the glossing over this plot since it happened is Kuwabara realizing it cheapened the story and is trying to memory hole the entire thing.

Kokoro barely ghosted her hand over the top of Kurumi's still clothed breast. If you actually summarize what Kokoro did to Kurumi it amounts to basically nothing. The entire scene felt super half-assed. It didn't commit to anything. Kokoro and Kurumi didn't do it. Naoi didn't catch them in the act of almost doing it. Kurumi's fever was just an excuse to have her faint and avoid consequences for her decisions. The fever felt like it was also being treated as the equivalent of her being drunk and not in control of her actions at the time anyway. Naoi brushes the whole thing off in the end. Not even Kudou has brought up what happened since, despite it being the perfect fuel to sow doubt in Naoi's mind. It was clearly cheap one-off drama with no foresight.

Kurumi's reaction to Kokoro being too gentle is what most people found offputting/unintentionally funny. If it was just Kurumi internally crying over Naoi's perceived betrayal the entire time the scene wouldn't be brought up nearly as much. The handling of the scene and what came after is flawed, especially if you do view it as a sexual assault/coercion. Because, Kurumi agreed to go on a "date" with Kokoro 2 chapters later, showed zero discomfort and then told Kokoro what a kind person she is. And keeping distance between the two of them was Kokoro's idea. And even chapter 23 was Kurumi thinking how unfair it was to Kokoro to just expect Kokoro to act like the old days after everything that happened.

The writing in ZenKowa is inconsistent. Most of Kurumi's narrations paint Kokoro as the victim, or well-meaning but misguided. But it's made clear that Kokoro doesn't actually care what Kurumi thinks and is just trying to take advantage of her.

Writing in vol. 4 being an ass is just an all-time popular trend that's hard not to jump on.

Yes, straight stuff unfortunately stopped focusing on the romance aspect by making sure the girl is already in love with male MC who in the other way is not allowed to feel anything or make any moves. Yuri on the other end focuses on either creating chemistry or obstacles for the girls to not get together. There is also straight shoujo and josei but they can really vary from being good to being really really terrible.

There was some RPG with romance or a VN that came out years ago and people were criticizing the writing as seeming unnatural and bizarre and the dev had to come out and apologize and say he had no experience with that kind of stuff in real life. That's what that shit often feels like, people that don't talk to other human beings trying to write about human beings communicating with each other and letting themselves be vulnerable and how they build different aspects of their lives independent of and with each other.

Yuri by virtue of its most fundamental elements at least lets its characters have real idiosyncrasies, even if it sometimes gets too overclocked as we see with all the menhera and petplay stuff.

But I'd argue that the best written straight stuff beats the best yuri stuff by a significant margin, like you'd hardly find anything as deep as the love story in Nier Automata or Umineko in yuri. Seinen has something like Natsu no Zenjitsu and Yonensei/Gonensei that could rival the best of Japanese films and literature in terms of storytelling.
