Cyril just likely saw his handwriting on older ledgers when the criminal was less careful, confronted him (which was dumb, but he is a teenager and a decent mage, so it's reasonably dumb), the professor used mind control magic on Cyril before he could do anything and decided to edit the ledgers right away before somebody more careful notices them and gets him arrested.

I was impatient and ended up jumping to the WN around where the LN left off and didn't really feel too lost doing so. The three major differences I saw were that the arc at the end of volume 6 doesn't seem to exist (they probably wanted to flesh out the Gem Mage compared to his weak characterization in the WN), Bartholomeus doesn't seem to exist, and Monica must have been on slightly better terms with the spies from the Empire since she reaches out to them later. I didn't start the WN from the beginning so I dunno about that last point but I enjoyed reading it and have been enjoying the gaiden chapters so far.
