We've always been shown two ways in which Gojo's Hina doll obsession manifests:
1. military-grade autism when it comes to tiny impossible details, which is when you get all the "srs bsns" panels with him fastening his hachimaki bandana thing.
2. being overly polite, old-fashioned and out of touch with modern society due to being a hermit living with his grandfather - due to anxiety around his identity that he didn't believe the world would accept before Marin pushed him connect with it and basically gave him an "in".
That's on top of little quirks for fleshing out these general tropes, like him putting tons of thought into Marin's / dolls' costumes but ironically having no sense of fashion when it comes to himself.
Gojo also clearly isn't only valued for his utility. There's plenty moments where he's shown to be integrated into Marin's school and cosplay friend groups. His skill is what got Marin's attention and what let the two bond with each other, but by the end she'd clearly still love him if he turned into an earthworm.
I think to boil him down into "nice guy that's useful" is reductionist at best and projection at worst. I think you'd have en easier time boiling down Marin to "pretty girl". Can you really not detect a personality unless he screams "BANZAI I FUCKING PAINTING DIFFICULT DETAILS" and draws his pen like a sword?
