Truth is the discussion here is ass and everyone here should be doing this stuff on the dedicated Wap threads, especially if you're mad about people shitting up these threads. Like really, if you guys went on Wap and did your weekly routine of spamming 100 reaction images/screenshots than maybe Wap would finally get some traction. Just last week there was a watch party and nobody showed up. Stop complaining and go to your dedicated board, poor figadmin works so hard to make the place nice yet all of you supposed retroheads come here to do the same thing every week when you could at least do it on a place that is catered to your every need and desperately needs posters.

Honestly, it's a shame how dire English imageboards are for users.
Most English speakers like the idea of being on a niche site, but nobody wants to actually move a way from the "relevant" spots. Figadmin, like acid/Mark or the webring guys, they can all put in as much effort as they want but nobody wants to actually leave 4chan.
Even the most "successful" non-4chan imageboard, the sharty, exists purely as an extension of 4chan and KF and has no real purpose beyond that. This isn't like Japan where there's a bunch of niche circles that maybe 6-10 people occupy, because people always want constant engagement and don't want to go to more than a handful of sites to get that.

On pre-2000s threads though, these have always sucked. It's mostly just people posting the same few anime with the same few screencaps. Like, we're finally gonna get a legendary 60s anime like Sasuke translated into English this year, and will there be anyone in these threads posting about it? Maybe one guy, but that's it because these threads aren't for discussing older anime, they're for iterating.
This is also why an actual /ar/ board would fail.

TRVTH NVKE, and yet they will continue to act as if it's impossible to even attempt to fix things. Every suggestion to change is met with half ass excuses or false promises. You pussies need to stop tentatively committing to something you're supposed to be enthused about. How hard is it to write a half thought out paragraph dedicated to whatever you've been watching or to replying to what someone else has to say about what they've been watching? Really you faggots are so full of shit.

That definately isnt the most successful, its just the newest one you probably go to.

The watchparty they had a bunch of ovas nobody either heard of or didnt like and it wasnt happening at my mobile speed. You cant draw everybody in with ultra obscure taste.
Those old saturday watches we did here during covid were nice and had no issues with streaming on mobile.

And there you have it, straight from the retrotards mouth, retrotards watch the same 36 shows and can't be bothered to watch something that isn't catered to them by consensus. The OVAs weren't even that obscure, one of them was a TAKAFUCKINGHASHI OVA that any fan of UY should be aware of, and the other two were obscure in comparison, but very accessible and reminiscent of their respective era of anime. Way to admit you're just a stuck up faggot who doesn't even watch anime.

It absolutely is the most successful, unless you want to start talking about (now) dead sites like the original 8ch and 420.
Of the current, existing imageboards, it is objectively the second most active English one.
Also, in what universe is wap's stuff "obscure"? It's a site founded on fucking UY posting, figadmin has niche tastes but every schedule I see for his groupwatches are pretty normal OVAs.

Missed the point entirely, not everybody that watches old stuff watched all of it or even wants to watch all of it.
That is entirely a modern phenomenon that came with you people blessed with streaming and torrents.
You want to get people to watch what you like try to get them in the door with something they might.
It was already done before like i already mentioned, it was working untill they put the kibosh on it here.

Oh boy here's the coping and meandering to explain why retrofans can't have discussion/enjoy what they're supposedly into, as predicted. You can devote entire threads to posting the same reaction images and single line samefagging posts, but you can't devote two hours to trying something new.
If anything, your sad excuse about not being able to watch random retroa just proves itself wrong. How retarded is it that in a time where you CAN stream and torrent anything and retro a is more accessible THAN EVER that the apparent retro a fans can't even be bothered to participate in a dedicated watch party with a bro who even puts it on CRT AND is very open to suggestions, if anyone showed up to make them. Now he's not going to do it for who knows how long and you faggots will continue to make these garbage threads.

Yatterman (1977) is fully subbed in English thanks to some autistic fan, the show might be a episodic comedy and most episodes do play out the same, but I think it is a pretty fun show overall still, 108 episodes is probably too long for some anons tho

Not yet but I am thinking about it at some point, this oneโ€™s historical for being the first toei anime at just 20 minutes, it was almost instantly overshadowed by tale of the white serpent that came out the same year which I have seen. Really, everyone here SHOULD absolutely check out the toei theatrical anime, they were significant enough to have had theatrical releases in America and toei was even once referred to as the Disney of the east. In order to truly be a retrohead, one must think outside of the box

It's strange honestly. I very much don't care for sports but I'm a real sucker for sports fiction. In a lot of ways it's really the most "human" type of story telling. You got your underdogs. Your struggle against adversity. Your great enemies and challenges. Mix in some side drama and romance if you will and it's the recipe for an rousing tale.

I rewatched both the movie and the series recently. I still liked both, but while the movie flashed me like 20 years ago, I've felt at least some problems with the series. I don't know if it's the pace or the structure, but even though there's always something different happening and the general plot is moving forwards, I still got the impression of a basic <thing of the week>. Many problems got resolved too quickly with big jumps from one plot point to the other. Also the ending of the series is to somber in contrast to the rest. A happy end would have fit pretty good. I recently finished Nadesio and I have zero clue how Ruri was one of the most popular female characters for like 3 years after this show aired. Japs must have been fucking starved of a good loli character back then. Regarding the show, I thought it was fun for the first half when it was being goofy, but as soon as the show tried getting a little serious, it fell off hard. I think with the right director and some changes to the plot and pacing, the serious turn could have worked... maybe.

Nah, I'm not gonna waste my time. Bad drama is bad. It's not about whether there's good rationale behind the intent, the execution is terrible. There's a reason why this show has been forgotten while other shows from the 90s that weren't nearly as popular back then have gotten revivals since.

I remember once being told the argument "Well it's better than nothing" but I can't help but feel, and perhaps I'm being dramatic, that bad subs are probably way worse. Bad subs aren't really better than raws a lot of the time but the bigger issue I fear is that potential NEW subbers won't be spot checking existing subs for quality. They'll see shows XYZ are subbed and leave it at that thus potentially blocking the chance for a better group who won't half ass shit to pick it up.

Being remembered by the original generation that watched and liked it at the time is hardly an achievement. When people talk about any work of art being "remembered," they're talking about new generations continually discovering it and liking it enough to reproduce it or reference it. There's only a handful of 90s anime that are actually remembered and Nadesico ain't it.

I have heard similar concerns for a few other 70s anime. People's thresholds for what is acceptable for this stuff differs so I just decided to be as generous as possible. In the future I might add notes to give additional information such as license status, if it is dubbed or if the subtitles are suspect.
