Why is Tomino considered one of the great anime directors? Everything he directed is generally poor quality compared to his contemporaries. You would need to have no value for animation, cinematography, and writing quality to think he is good.

Because his delivers animation on time and on budget without it looking completely cheap. It might not seem much, but he has a huuuuuuuuuuuge list of work behind his belt.

I like the way he does limited animation. Instead of doing walk cycles in zeta, he just pans the camera and has people move in the same position. Whereas in other TV shows there would be non-sakuga moment and it would be glaringly noticeable.

it is not because tomino is good at what he does, its because tomino pioneered the "do whatever bat shit crazy thing you want with as much passion as you can" show for anime. without his influence a ton of modern anime prob wouldn't have the same level of personal connection from the director.
