I love the explanation for that reason. Even granting that the Shimazu were bumpkins they were still an old and powerful daimyo clan. The burly woman in the photographs hardly evokes the feeling of a court lady, even less a shogun's consort, but if she was a hardy servant from a lowly samurai family dressed up in the robes it would make more sense. Shima in the story was picked to attend on Kazu-no-miya partly because she was mannish enough to disguise herself too...

Thank you. I read part of this years ago, but this was the first time I read it all the way through and it was worth every panel. I'm astounded by how good it is, and how it stayed good throughout. There's this real quiet competency about it where it's not flashy, but it just does (almost) everything so well.

I'm still impressed at how every shogun looks somewhat similar, but they're all visual distinct. Even the many Arikotos are all distinct on some level. It's something else.

So, if Takiyama in this story was around 20 years old at that time, then he would have been in his mid-40s when Edo Castle was surrendered in 1868.

theres ALOT of incidental characters like the chef and the guy who starved himself to death, Ienari's wife and her accomplice, Takahashi kageyasu (girl with glasses), MIzuno, Gyokuei and more that were missed in those graphs. Fair to say more than 70 characters, points to the mangaka to make them all similar but recognizables
