Eh I tried to read it but the prose is a bit weird for me even by chinese webnovel standards. I got filtered.
I much prefer watching the adaptation even if >>281099165 is completely right. But even if it's unintentional (or rather the result of not enough adaptation work) the "things just happen" factor gives the show a sense of dread like tragedy is just around the corner every episode, which I don't dislike. "Deep" Bones like anime with complex plots and barely any exposition are so rare nowadays I don't mind watching unintentionally obtuse stuff like this especially if there's fun world building about the eldritch abomination gods presiding every pathway. I really like the vibes I guess. The art direction is superb too.

Looking at MAL, there's only 4.7k ratings for the original novel at 9.10. There's about 15k ratings for the donghua, and it's still around 8.48.
If it was just WN readers, they'd also jack up the numbers for the novel at the same time, but the difference is too large.

"Nothing was explained" and "power progression was skipped" are not the same thing though. The main character drinks his first potion in episode 2 and is still stuck on his level 1 potion by episode 6. As for the fog he literally always had access to it. It's no different from Naruto starting out his series with the demon fox in his belly. The focus is not on how he got it but on how he's gonna use it and how that + transmigration make the MC different from the rest. You really need to stop acting like stuff like this is a departure from classic anime/donghua storytelling practices, the mere idea is laughable.
I mean, the show has a lot of shortcomings but "skipping power progression" is not one of them, sorry to say.

It’s not hard to follow for high-IQs, but it’s NOT a high-IQ plot, quite the opposite actually. However you need a strong IQ to get through the spastic noise and connect the fragmented relevant information. A competent screenplay would have presented it in a way that most people could grasp.

I don't really get the crying about this show. I mostly in agreement with this guy >>281099294 . The vibe of the show is quite good and if you have even the faintest idea about "cultivation" most of the internal logic is quite obvious to grasp.
Sure some of the episodes have breakneck pacing and I don't know what exactly the source material would entail but all that which is unfolding isn't really that complex to follow.
A big part of the retard audience is just used to getting everything feed by exposition dump even though it is not really needed and they start seizing up when not being carefully handheld.
I'm not expecting the greatest story of history but the spooky mood is quite a nice shakeup from usual shows.
