I think he just expected to wait a little for some talks with other families and then show the golden chains as the dowry when he decided in one he actually enjoyed. Honestly Ali doesn't seem to be that into Medina. It doesn't seem to be romantic at all. But that's what makes it so interesting. He's practical and fine with whatever, so he says yes to Medina because it would make her happy and she's acceptable to him. The scope of their women's lives is so narrow and their romantic lives so risky that so many of them don't consider love or attraction. So while it is one sided it really still is a happy outcome for Medina. She really probably wouldn't be able to do better.

It's a comedically twisted romance story. The outwardly unacceptable man, the "not like the other girls" heroine, the back and forth on the money involved and the heroine's complicated interest. The execution just makes it comedic because instead of being emotionally constipated and brooding, Ali is just actually that stoic and uninterested. And the money situation is a plot point to make everyone act ridiculous instead of adding any real tension.
