There are only really 3 things that go beyond the most basic rules and move-sets that need to be kept in mind with Chess:

1. Castling: When the king and a rook of choice haven't moved yet and there is no other piece between them, the king can move 2 spaces towards that rook while the rook goes in the space between the starting point of the king and the king's new position. It is the only move in Chess where a piece can take another piece without ending up in the same spot as the taken piece, thus it's called en passant ("in passing").

3. Patt: In Chess it's actually considered an illegal move to move your king into a position where it can be taken by an enemy piece (except for maybe one of the super-high-speed variants, but I am not sure about that). That means that it's possible for a player to be in a position where their king is not in check, but they cannot make any legal moves with any of their figures (e.g. all pawns blocked by enemy pawns while king is surrounded by "endangered" spaces). Contrary to what one might surmise from this, it does not result in the other player's victory but rather in a tie.
