Furry style seems to draw more from sports mascots and costumes than cartoon animals also why they are mostly a human body covered in fur and an animal head, because most of the time they were representing a fursuit. Another fact is on how western furry communities operate on commissions meaning a furry obsessed with some obscure fetish can support a shitty artist, since a single commissioner can keep the demand high there is not much incentive or feedback for improvement so unless the artist have a healthy dose of self criticism they can stay decades making shitty drawings.
Japanese furries seems to be more related to cute mascots and less human bodies are more common while the head is often more humanized, the artists usually draw doujinshis and sell those at conventions. Even if they have a massive fan who always buy the doujinshi that is not enough to support the artist. The artist motivation is to get better so more people would be interested in their work. Also they are less likely to be exclusive furry artists, many Japanese artists that draw mostly furry characters also draw humans and many of the ones who draw mostly human characters also draw furry art.

The first furry con was about the restoration of Animalympics. The scene became full of pervs and sex pests for the same reason everything else does, not because it was started by them.

That is my point. Almost all the early stuff is straight. To the point that a common criticism for earlier gay works was that they were being unrealistic when depicting a large amount of gays among the budding furry community. Sadly, these depictions gave the wrong idea and attracted them. Same thing happened with fursuiters, zoophiles, and so on.

This show the difference in how these demographics are. 90% of people in the population are straight but the proportions are almost reversed in the furry communities. Furry and kemono are a case of convergent evolution, they have different roots but ended up doing anthropomorphic animals. Of course there is some influence on each other, specially with the internet and all so some western artists do art closer to the east side than the west and the same can happen the other way around but that is rare unless you count cartoon animals that I consider a separated group from both kemono and furries due to style. Basically the typical furry, the ones from furry conventions, etc, the cartoon animal-person (Bugs Bunny, Mickey, Donald) and kemono.

My point is that there really isn't one big unifying trait that encompasses each group anymore and it comes down to what individual artists you enjoy. The era of furry art being dominated by artists taking direct influence from bugs and micky is long gone, and not every eastern artists exclusively draws chibi potato kemonos. Going back to the topic of "weirdness" for a moment even something like disaster fox, which at first glance seems pretty typical of the cutesy potato style, sets itself apart by clearly channeling the authors hand/paw fetish.
